wow. just wow. that was a great flick. a tad formulaic at times but, as people have said, the production values and the (to my untrained eye) apt portrayal of traditional Japanese culture really put it over the top. the fight scenes and Samurai lifestyle stuff was extremely badass as well. compared to gladiator and braveheart (two movies this one is very similar to) i would say last samurai easily has the best portrayal of battle and fight scenes.

also, i'm a bit of a history buff myself :)o) so i really liked how it tied together many different strands of history from all parts of the world in the late 18th century.

really good movie. i would highly recommend it.

except the story line is a complete BS.

did it say anywhere that the movie was based on true story? why not just enjoy the movie for what it is?

Then sometimes you run into these anal attentive people who insist that a feature blockbuster movie be 100% accurate. It is a free market economy, the produce and sell what will be be bought.
We have The History Channel for everything else.

Well said.

Saw it tonight, loved it - I never go into a movie expecting it to be perfect in any way, and in that sense I enjoy more movies than a lot of people.
Think I might have to pick up this one on DVD though.

Saw it today. Good movie. The fight scenes are phenominal, and the acting amongst the Japanese cast is top work all around. Cruise was horribly miscast in the lead role, though. For the love of god, man, show some decent emotion! He was easily the mood wooden of all of them, and I got the odd impresion that he didn't really give a damn. Which is really hard to believe, considering the glorious material and setting he had to work with! The rest was excellent. The ending drags in places, most notably Katsumoto's death scene. Wow, that went on a good 5 min more than it should have. Still, great flick and I intend to see it again at the cheap theaters. It's also something that really has to be seen on the big screen to really appreciate some of the shots.

Oh, I find it amusing Ken Watanabe gets top billing over Tom Cruise on the IMDB credits :p

I saw it tonight...if I had to choose between the Last Samurai and Master and Commander, I would go with Last Samurai.

surprising.... ive heard LS is good to very good but ive heard M&C is like an all-time great amazing movie. M&C is also beating LS handily on RT

master and commander was ok
i liked samurai more

i have a small dislike for crowe and cruise, but violence lures me in

**** for the samurai, gotta love ninja murder action
