gonna get a k&n filter for free, should I use it?

It's a drop in filter for a current generation i4 accord. Supposedly they're bad at letting dirt in tho 😛

use it, just make sure you clean it more often then the k&n suggests, that will prevent excess dirt from entering

Well, if you get the K&N, you won't have to worry about another filter for 1,000,000 miles. You just have to clean it in 30,000 mile intervals. Some have noticed more hp, others have not. Some have noticed better mileage, some have not. At least you get a "beefier" sound from your engine.
Check to see if the oil from the filter would do any damage to your MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. I had one in my '05 Altima, but replaced my whole intake system recently. I had no problems.
Plus, if it's free, try it out. They usually sell for around $50.

I used one of these in my last 2 vehicles.
I noticed a little more power and slightly better mileage.

Clean them when they look dirty, I didn't go by the number of miles, I'd just pull it out inpsect it every few months and cleaned it if it looked bad.

Can't hurt to try it.

live on the edge. try it.

My last two vehicles have had k&n cone filters and they always worked well for me

no. a small barrier of dirt provides better filtration.

bah, not your problem anymore when you sell your car right? 🙂

and i did notice a slight increase in gas mileage. horsepower wise it is much neglicable.

Well, I'm leaning towards keeping this car for a while now, I'm not sure I want to buy a nicer car anymore because inevitably some dumbass is gonna ding/scratch it in a parking lot.

I'm probably gonna try it for a day or two and then take it out.

It's less restrictive than a normal filter so yes, it will let a little more dirt into the engine. Also, if you over-oil it, then you'll have problems with the oil potentially gumming up some of the sensors in the intake tract. That's easy to avoid though.

Personally, I would stick with a high-quality paper filter, but I'm obsessive about that stuff and the K&N should be fine as long as you're not gunning for 200,000+ miles.

I used a cone K&N HAI, not a drop-in, for over 150K miles without any issues. My car now has about 220K miles and still running strong. I don't know if this is because a K&N will do minimal, if any, damage or if a VQ is that bullet-proof. I am, however, donating it this year for maximum write-off.

You would have to be high on crack to use one of those filters for 1 million miles. 100k would be the max as far as I'm concerned. After repeated cleaning and re-use they just don't filter as well IMO.

Edit-I used one on my wife's BMW and it didn't do any good. In fact, I think it messed up the way the car drove cold. I threw it away and went back to paper.

haven't heard anything but good stuff about K&N, but then again, most of the people i know have a whole different intake system than stock. I'd probally at least try it out.

Well I just tried it and it seemed to help a little? While on light throttle and low speeds, the tach seems to point lower than usual. I'll leave it in for a little bit.

The OE filter is actually a paper filter that also is oiled. I did use an STP filter once that had few, thick pleats and that actually noticeably affected part throttle response. I ended up going back to stock after a week with that on. Just a couple months ago, I used to think all air filters were the all the same sh*t but not any more.

HAI? hot air intake?

yup, it was essentially sucking in the hot air from the engine compartment since I didn't shield it or run tubing to the wheel-well.
