Neweggs shipping has gotten to be rediculous. I went to order 3 PS's and an external HD enclosure and the friggin shipping was over 25 bucks. Went to Directron and ordered the same stuff and the shipping was 10 bucks. Even tho the prices we a little higher, Directron was still cheaper overall.

Screw newegg. :(

I order from CompUPlus over Newegg now because their prices are competitive, and their packages get to me overnight via UPS Ground. The best part is that they are located right across the state line, so I don't pay tax :).

Doomer,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

This comes to a surprise to me personally, only because I thought we had recently modified our shipping calculator to avoid this type of issue.

Now, we completely understand your motive to shop elsewhere, but, if you're willing to help us out, we'd like to investigate your recent experience. If you could provide us with the item#'s that you attempted to purchase, we'll gladly investigate further.

Thanks, in advance, for helping us out!

Edit: Doomer, could you also include the zip code to your shipping location? Thanks!

I've never had any huge problems wth Directron but everything about them seems low class. Their packing sucks. Their website sucks. Everything is done half-assed. But yes, you get your products and yes they are legit.

You probably saved about $5 over newegg on about $150 worth of stuff. To me, 3-4% is not enough savings to steer clear of a quality, proven vender such as newegg. I can't say enough fabulous things about their support and overall service. I go elsewhere if I can save 15-20% over newegg but if not its not worth it to me.

You haunt this forum putting out brush fires :D Don't want no flare ups now...do we.

NewwEgg is third or fouth choice in my shopping...at best.

Provantage, Buy.com, Jab-Tech, Sidewindercomputers, Directron, eWiz and there are
several others to look at as well, Allelectronics, BGMicro, MicroTool, Action-Electronics.

Shoot!! There are maybe 20 more I have filed away.

I've bought from Directron a few times. Never had a problem and the shipping was cheap. This was a while ago though so I don't know if they changed their practices lately or not

Personally, I like NewEgg. I like their prices and the way their website is laid out. It's really easy to find anything I need there.

I stopped shopping with them quite a few months ago for the same reason. My CPU needed a new heatsink, so I found one on NewEgg for a great price. Guess what? The quoted cost was $30 to ship the item via FedEx. I passed and ordered elsewhere. The shipping prices are killer if you live in Alaska. I've since found other stores like SVC which charge me a reasonable shipping cost ($5 Priority Mail vs. $30 FedEx).

I can now vouch for NewEgg's new shipping calculator method. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they're no longer obscenely stacking charges. They'll be getting more & more of my business if this keeps up.

I ordered a power supply from directron on the 6th of July, got an email on the 10th saying it was on backorder and would be shipped the 15th. It wasn't on back order when I made the order. I called them up on the 17th, 11 days later, guess what, still on back order. I cancelled the order. I went to newegg and ordered one, and for the first time it was shipped the same day. It is scheduled for delivery on the 20th. I have had a few problems with newegg, but customer service has always been good. My biggest gripe is, it always takes a week for me to get my stuff from Newegg. And I bought a case from them and it had a dead power supply. It would cost more to ship back the case and maybe get the same thing, than to take the loss.

I stopped shopping with them a while back because of the stacked shipping. If that is fixed I will probably be buying more from them again. I also use a few other vendors as well.

Those were some very good shipping deals. I stick with New Egg, because their customer service has been excellent and beyond IMO. Yeah, living in Kahleeforneeya, I have to pay sales tax, which I could probably beat if I shopped elsewhere, but that's part of the cost of living in a sales-tax state...which BTW, LEGALLY, you are supposed to report all out-of-state purchases and pay the appropriate sales tax anyway...(hell no, I don't do it either!)

http://www.boe.ca.gov/sutax/isvdprog.htm
"In-State Voluntary Disclosure

Generally, use tax applies when a person or business in California purchases tangible merchandise from a retailer outside of this state that will be used, consumed, given away, or stored in this state. From January 1, 2004, through January 1, 2006, the In-State Voluntary Disclosure Program (Revenue and Taxation Code section 6487.06) allowed qualified purchasers within California who were not otherwise required to hold a seller's permit to report and pay their use tax liability with a three-year statute of limitations. Passage of Assembly Bill 671 (Chapter 308; Statutes of 2005) amended section 6487.06 to extend the previous sunset date of the program from January 1, 2006 to January 1, 2008"

"Who is Liable for California Use Tax Purchases?

Use tax is imposed upon the purchaser. It generally applies to purchases from out-of-state vendors who do not collect California tax on their sales. If sales tax would apply when you buy a particular item in California, use tax applies when you make a similar purchase from a business outside the state.
For further information, please see Publication 112, Purchases from Out-of-State Vendors. "

Fortunately, they haven't really cracked down on this law...As of now, it's technically voluntary, but you read stoies every once in a while in the paper where they bust someone for violation of the law by failing to report...cigarettes are one of the big no-no's that they bust people for...

Compared to Newegg they barely have customer service. If you have a problem you can't even contact them directly, you have to post a message in their stupid forums. You don't really become aware of this until you have a problem that needs to be resolved.

I use directron all the time. Newegg charges me 9.25% sales tax. I would not buy a video card from them, but they are competitive on everything else. Never had an issue returning stuff either.

If you ever walked into directron, you would vomit. The place is disgustingly disorganized...it envelopes a pathetic attempt at customer service. They literally have 5 people who do phone orders, storefton orders, customer service. Not only that, but I KNOW FOR A FACT that they take returned products or rma's throw them back into inventory and sell them, looking for the 15% restocking fee when you have to return an item because it did not work and they blame u for it not working.

horrible place to make big purchases.

Also might i add that places like newegg and zipzoomfly provide so much more service. I once had a newegg rep call Bank of America and tell them to go F themselves for not knowing how to process simple credit charges on a credit/debit card.

The chance you take with directron, and the high odds that theyll screw you, will make negligent any small pricing advantage you may get from them.
