Im going Golfing again on monday. My friends let me use their Drivers, Irons, Putters, and Woods. One of them gave me a 5 and a 3 Wood, a couple of irons, and a putter. I dont have a driver and they said i can use theirs. However, im having a blast going to the driving range and what not. I kind of want to buy my own driver. I am a beginner and this is only my second time on a Course.

Right now my drives have gone as far as 190 Yards. Typically i hit 150-160 though.

Can someone recommend me a good driver to buy for a good price. (Cheaper the better right now).

Ebay for the win. Find yourself a recognizable brand an score it. There are way too many choices at way too many prices, and it's rediculous how much hype goes into selling clubs as if one weeks worth of technology makes a difference. They are sticks with big heads, not computers. And at your level you won't need to worry about weight, flex, and all those other technical thing that people swear make a difference.

Always look for drivers that are couple of years old

Some of the good drivers don't hold value, because everybody buys the most popular ones( taylormade, Calloway, etc).

Lot of name brand drivers will start out around $200-$500 or even more, depending on the shaft..

Look for Wilson, McGregor, Adams, Mizuno...etc..

You can get McGregor V-foil for around $40. Wilson Dd5 460cc for around $60 NEW..

They are excellent drivers, poor sales are driving prices down.

Wilson Staff Dd5 won awards on Golf Digest in 2005.
It was around $300 when it came out.

I recommend 460cc, because of forgiveness. You might even get a better deal on used ones..

Ebay is your friend.. Ebay is huge on Golf Clubs..

Im trying to find that Wilson Dd5 but everything i find comes up with $150 or so. IF you found it for $60 is there anyway you can link it to me.

We have a "Play-it-again" sports store that sells used sports equipment. If i go there can you recommend some good brands to look at. Also since i am a beginner, can you tell me what i want (As far as angle, __cc, and anything else)

Since the tournament (Which is a Youth Group fundraiser so nothing big) is on monday i dont have time to order it monday.

Guy at work started golfing with me...first time out i let him use my old 5 wood...snaps it. Few holes later i let him use my new driver...snaps it.

don't worry about brands.

Go to the second hand store, look for a driver with a large head, some offset and 10.5 degrees. Hit each of them a few times and get the one you like that "felt" good and you made solid contact.

Me personally I get the 400-500 dollar drivers after they've been out a few years for like 130 bucks.

Make sure you get something used...no point in getting a new driver right now, youre gonna dimple it anyways as you learn how to swing. Its very easy to find good used drivers, folks are often selling used clubs at yard sales if you want to check that out.

just use your 3 wood for now. you will probably hit as far with the 3 as you would with a driver, just a bit easier and less error prone.

that is the displacement or size of the head. larger head = bigger sweet spot for the most part. more forgiving if you don't really hit it "on the screws"

190 isn't bad. If you can keep it in the fairway most of the time you're doing great.

If you really want to play, you'll start taking lessons. VERY helpful for any golfer.

length is not nearly as important as accuracy.

don't worry about length, worry about form. get your swing down, length will just come.

Don't worry about distance, just worry about making a good swing. Once you get a good swing (using your body torque and not your arms), your distance will increase. The swing is more important than anything else (I'm a 21 year old guy, weigh 190 lb and work out daily, and I drive it between 270-290 yards with good accuracy, I've seen skinny 60 year old men hit it longer than that with regularity)

Ok so ill hold off on the 1-Wood/Driver, and ill go to the driving range and practice more. If i feel so compelled i might stop and take a look at the various drivers tomorrow.

1.) my short game is good, but pros have an unbelievable short game, much better than most people realize
2.) my putting isnt exactly top notch (im really inconsistent)
3.) being a pro isnt about just hitting good distance with accuracy, you need to be able to create shots (hit draws and fades when needed, be able to hit soft irons, go off your front and back foot)

I have a 7 handicap, hoping to lower it this summer. I just dont have the time to dedicate to improving my short game to the point where I can play competitively

Depeding on how you swing I could see the stress on the head breaking possibly, but brand new? I Call that defective.

7 handicap for someone who doesn't do it for a career is amazing.

if i had a 7 handicap and was younger than 30 and didn't have a family, i'd take a shot at going pro.

lol, I think you underestimate how difficult it is to shave strokes off your handicap. I just graduated from college this week, so I'll probably have some more time to play as I decide what to do with my life, but I honestly don't feel like I have what it takes mentally to be a pro golfer.

you are right of course. i don't have a clue because i'm not that good a golfer yet. 😉 the OP should keep this in mind when reading what i post. i have heard lots of advice tho.


but seriously, if i were still in college and had a 7 handicap, i would definitely want to take a shot at being a pro.

golf seems to be the one game where you can start late in life and still have a shot.

Well the driving range is just down the street so i just got back. Man today was an ugly day. Partly because im still sore from ~2 hours yesterday, but inexcusable. My best drives were 175 and what not and i think i have something fundamentally wrong with my swing. I can consistently hit it a good distance. I guess i just need practice. Ill have 1 maybe 2 more driving range practices before Monday, so hopefully i can improve upon everything. Then i have a Mini-Golf thing as another Fundraiser for the Youth Group this Sunday (For people who dont want to play the real thing, or who want to do both), so ill have some WEIRD putting practice (If you can call it that).
