Golfers - recommend new driver

spidey07

I've been playing with a taylor made bubble for many years. Its an ok driver.

Some of my golfin buddies (some are scratch) are really raving about the new huge/bouncy drivers.

Any recommendations? I don't want to spend more than 250 and keeping it in the fairway is most important.

I'm about a 15 but lately have been using 3 wood off the tee for control, but that makes my 2nd shot difficult at times due to distance.

-ps- It doesn't have to conform to USGA rules for ERC. 😉

i really like the Nike 460CC driver 🙂

Don't quite have the money to spend on it, but that's the next driver I want.

a few of the guys here recommend that you have one custom made vs buying a name brand.

That would be a good idea. I need a little more length, stiff shaft and oversize grip (big hands).

And recommended heads?

$200 will build a KILLER driver. The top heads on the component market these days are the Bang Bang-o-Matic, the Bang FU2, the SMT 455, SMT Nemesis, Hireko Powerplay 5000, Snake Eyes 600T, Wishon 915 and quite a few others. Any of those could be paired with a high-end shaft that will easily outperform any $400 pro-shop club and still get you out the door for $200 or less. In fact you'd be amazed how good a driver $100 will build.

If you're looking for control, the Bang-o-Matic and the SMT 455 are my top choices, they're big heads, superforgiving and all they want to do is hit the ball straight.

How do you go about finding a custom shop? Yellow pages?

I think I'll start looking around. Thanks for the tips!

Custom made is the way to go, but it was quite expensive for my set.

I've been wanting to get a new set of irons as well and will most definately be getting fitted.

If you spent more for a custom set than you would have paid for an unfitted, *supposedly* top of the line proshop set you got ripped off. A great set of hand-built, custom irons made from excellent components should be much less than a piece-of-s**t set of Nikes or Callaways.

And while were on the custom route.

I purchased my 3 wood with a "bi-matrix" shaft. The bottom of 4" or so of the shaft is stell, the rest stiff graphite.

I really, really love that club. When you connect it is VERY solid.
