he has improved greatly, but he has 2-9 irons, and drivers, SW as well. i would like to get him another club for his bag, i havent played with him in a while, but hes good, not great, he may have gotten to par average right now, maybe a lil over...
would you suggest maybe a hybrid, or something? or do you need more information.
When replacing or adding clubs, you need to factor in two things:
1) What clubs does the player hit poorly and why?
2) Are there distance gaps and what club will cover that gap?
Watch your father play. What clubs does he struggle with? What clubs is he so bad with that he won't even pull them from the bag? What shot does he often face that he simply can't pull off with his current set? He's *PROBABLY* a good candidate for either a hybrid or a high lofted fairway wood like a 7-wood or 9-wood to replace the long irons or to fill a gap between his fairway woods and long irons.
And DO NOT get him a lob wedge. Those clubs are suicide in the hands of golfers of average skill. They're actually very hard to play effectively and a situation where they're truly needed rarely arises on a normal course. The simple fact is that most average golfers will get better by adding hybrids and high-loft fairway woods and most will get worse by adding a lob wedge. Keep the SW as the shortest most lofted club in his bag.
A gift certificate is a good idea though. It's better to let most golfers pick their own clubs rather than buying something for them. STRONGLY suggest he use it on a hybrid or FW wood though.
