I was always content with my 3 wood as it's my favorite club. Works well, tons of distance. But if you aren't in the fairway - tough to hit. Buddies kept telling me to get a hybrid.

So I did. A 21 degree hybrid. Think of it as a metal wood. Heavy head, but small and shaft much shorter than a 3 wood.

Man does this thing fly. I hit it 9/9 perfectly this weekend and it's only my second time using it. If I need distance (200+) and the ball isn't in the short stuff, it's now my go to club. Works left and right even from the rough.

Can't believe I waited this long to get one, but now loving it.

Not just good from the rough, they're sooo much easier to hit than long irons.

I hit my long irons fine but I was thinking about one of these for in the rough. I just don't know if it would screw up my long iron hitting though...

i have 2 hybrids, an 18 degree Orlimar hybrid and a 27 degree Nike one. i love the nike one, the orlimar isn't as good for me. it's not heavy enough i think. the nike is nice and heavy, but even at 27 degrees, i can hit that about 175 yrds.

Hybrids are by far the best thing to come to Ameature golf since the oversized driver. They easier to hit than Irons and Woods, and have the length of a wood or long iron. I personally don't use them because I don't like the trajectory of them, but they are great for you guys.

2nd favorit club = 2 iron. But it's darn tough to hit out of the rough.

this hybrid does what the 2 iron does on the fairway, but from some thick stuff. me thinks that heavy head has something to do with it.

when I first tried it out at the simulator the pro looked at the computer "235 yards". Sold.

I love it. Unless you are a 8 or less, nice to have in the bag. We don't always hit the fairway, now do we? I'll give you the trajectory though, this one seems to fly a little higher than a 3 wood.

But if I can save a bad drive with this guy, I'm all over it.

I really need to get one.
I can usually get a decent shot with my 3-iron out of light rough or fairway, and if I can do this with a long iron, I can't imagine what Ill be able to do with a Hybrid.
What is the recommended degree? 21?
What are known as some of the top brands for it? TM Rescue? The Nike iron woods?

nike rescue woods are pretty good, i have one, a 27 degree one, nice heavy head but a high trajectory and not very long, about equivalent to a 6 iron.

a friend of mine bought some taylor made hybrids without trying them first and he doesn't like them. he bought them for the name.

i recommend hitting them before getting one.

I picked one up last year. Absolutely love it. I don't remember what degree it is but it is roughly equivalent to a 3 iron.

I guess that's the point of my post.

You find yourself needing/wanting a 200/220+ yard club out of the rough.

What are you gonna use? I love my 2 and 3 iron but that grass is gonna hang it up.

Personally I can't muscle an iron that long out of some thick stuff. this thing, no problem.

I don't know much about brands as I'm a firm believer that brand means nothing with this game. this club is a taylor made knock off, complete with the screws and everything. Something about walter hagen. Love it though.

<-- 16 degree Ping G5 Hybrid

Crazy consistent, absurdly long, and really easy to shape.

Picking up a 22 here in the near future

It's amazing how many PGA pros carry them now, many have given up their 4 or 5woods for them. I guess I'm too old school, I still prefer a 5wood. I still have a 1iron but I don't carry it any more, but it used to be my go to club for tee shots on tight par fours.

I'm glad I don't play competitively anymore, because with all the wedges and the variety of clubs these days choosing just 14 to carry in the bag would be tough

"only god can hit a 1 iron"

I've got one. and i would agree.

i think that a 5 wood is still a good club to have, although I rarely use mine. but if I need to get over some stuff it works really wall.

you're right though, chosing what to carry is getting harder and harder. depends on the course I guess. me and my foursome? we don't count. :p

If I had to choose between a 3 wood and this 3i hybrid. I'll take the hybrid everyday. Without thinking, I'll take this. I may even give up my 3wood and 3 iron and replace it with the hybrid.

So far the ebst club I use for 200+ in the deep rough is my lofty 9 wood.
Best club in mybag.

It's "Not even God can hit a 1-iron". It comes from Lee Trevino and was a joke about what to do if you're caught on the course in a lightning storm. He suggested holding a 1-iron over your head since not even God would be able to hit you then. Of course Trevino was struck by lightning on the course once (as was Retief Goosen) so what did he know?

I personally feel that God needs to take some lessons. I've carried a 1-iron for ages and I'll give it up when they pry it out of my cold dead hands. Or at least I'll give it up when I find a hybrid that works better. So far, I have not found one that's even close. Hybrids are indeed a great club for 95% of golfers. For those people they're far easier to hit that long irons. For the rest of us hybrids simply don't work. Not everyone wants a club with lots of sole weight or offset. I'm looking to keep my ball flight down and don't need a club whose sole purpose is to get the ball into the air easier.

I'm no expert, but that's probably because of the weight of the head and it being small. Similar to what the hybrids try to accomplish.

hitting a 9 wood out of the rough 200+ is pretty damn good IMHO.

Are these similar to 7 woods? or X clubs? Small heavy head, looks kinda like a wood but a sharper degree? If so, it is the best thing since sliced bread for noobs, like me. My friend had one when I was in HS and we would all use it off the fairway/rough

I was hoping you'd chime in.

Can you maybe explain the design and purpose of these clubs? Because to tell you the truth, I can't muscle a long iron that far out of the thick stuff. It always hangs up. Sure I'd rather take a long iron, but I know for me and my game, the higher percentage shot is with the hybrid.

If I miss with the long iron, I'm hurtin'. If I miss with this thing I'm OK. Then again I shoot low 80s and sometimes (just sometimes) break into the 70s. So I'm no expert, but I do love this club.

IMO the 1iron is best used off the tee, they can be hit from the fairway or light rough but just like hitting a driver off the deck it takes and immaculately clean strike and a pretty high clubhead speed. At 49 years of age and only getting to play a few times a year, I just don't trust my abilities well enough to use one anymore

*edit*

To answer spideys question, long irons like a 1 or 2 are designed for fairway wood distance with better accuracy and lower trajectory provided by the less tapered(higher flex point) iron shaft. Growing up and playing college/semi pro golf in Texas winds it was a must have club.

i remember olazabul winning a major i think it was about 12 yrs ago. they were saying it was the changing of the guard and that golf would never be the same. he didn't carry a driver, only a 1 iron.

GagHalfrunt...

my father uses Cleveland Irons, and Taylor Made drivers, extremely nice set, dont know the name right now.

he has improved greatly, but he has 2-9 irons, and drivers, SW as well. i would like to get him another club for his bag, i havent played with him in a while, but hes good, not great, he may have gotten to par average right now, maybe a lil over...

would you suggest maybe a hybrid, or something? or do you need more information.

Your Dad might like an L(lob) wedge, usually 60-64 degrees, more loft than a SW. Or maybe a gap wedge (between a PW and a SW)
But to tell you the truth if he's approaching scratch(par), you'd probably be better off getting him a gift certificate and letting him pick his own club. Clubs are a very individual thing for good golfers

Well, you're not supposed to be able to muscle a long iron out of thick rough. NOBODY can. Long irons simply do not have the design to make that shot possible even for skilled golfers. Out of the rough there's no doubt that hybrids are FAR superior to long irons, even for those of us that hit hybrids poorly and long irons well. To be honest though, I'm rarely faced with that shot, so I don't feel the need to carry a club for it. I hit a lot of fairways and on most holes only have a short to mid iron in to the green. If I hit a poor tee shot and am in some bad rough 230 from the green I'll ht wedge-wedge and try to save par that way.

My 1-iron though sees a lot of use. It's a tee club for tight par 4's. I know I can hit it straight, solid and long and find the fairway. I know I can hit a low draw and I know I can control it in the wind. Those are all shots I play frequently rather than the long approach out of deep rough that I face infrequently. So I carry a club that I'll hit 5 times a round rather than a club I'll need once every other round.
