Are you just starting now or have you played a bit? There a scores of clubs that will work perfectly fine for a beginning golfer and at reasonable prices. I personally wouldn't buy a expensive set if you are just starting out and don't even know whether or not you like the game. If you play I would serously take into consideration how much you play and how much you invision playing over the next few years because if you go buy a major brand set you are talking some $$$ IMHO.
A few years ago I bought a set of Wilson clubs that have served me quite well and at this point my game does not dictate the need for better clubs, probably because I don't play enuf to get much better than I am now.
There is plenty of time later to upgrade to superior clubs. there a quite a few major brands and they all have knockoffs that are very good as well - I would recommend you purchase a golf magazine to find all the latest info on clubs.

hope it helps you out - golf is a lot of fun but takes time, time that I don't have at this point.

I like Taylor Made and Calloways

If price is an option look for a store called second chance sports. You can usually get a good deal on a set of golf clubs there.

I just picked up a new set a few weeks ago...

Taylor Made Supersteel Burners - Steel shaft

Their awesome clubs for a beginner, very forgiving, and very sturdy... You can get them for $399 at sportsauthority.com

If you're just learning, try to find a used set somewhere for starters. I'd try to stick to the modern "cavity back" clubs as the older blade-style clubs aren't really fun to hit if you're not a low-handicapper. I have a set of Lynx Parallax irons I picked up at a Play It Again Sports for $130 that work great for me. I'm down to about a 15 handicap now and see no reason to "upgrade" clubs.

Have fun!:)
