Im getting a Golf R, but delivery will not happen until March. Im currently car-free (have been for 6 years, since i sold my 337) and need to get something until then. Can i expect the dealer to work with me on something used? Should i just get a beater until then knowing that i will lose money? Or should i entertain some other option?

You could rent something or look into a short term lease, but buying a used beater and the reselling it is your best bet if your only keeping the car for 5 months.

Look at a inexpensive 4 cyl 4wd vehicle as your backup. If after a year of having two cars you find yourself NEVER using it then sell it then. After taxes and the other crap you will have to do to the new/old you may as well keep it for a bit.

How about a older forester or a small explorer?

Get a beater and you can sell it for essentially what you paid or slightly more with some elbow grease cleaning it up.

buy a lancer evolution... realize the R will be underpower and overpriced while the lancer is cheaper and a lot of fun -> keep lancer evolution and cancel R order

How much are you paying for it? 2 or 4 door? I love the hot hatch GTI/Golf as much as anybody, but paying ~$35k for a golf when you could get a loaded brand new Mustang GT is insanity to me.

poor op is getting hammered unnecessarily. While I personally would not buy a Golf R I easily see the value in what they are offering. Its a great car that give lots of smiles for 35K.

Agreed. $30k would be more reasonable for this car. $35k (probably more because dealers will throw options in here for most on the lot) is too much.

Evo/STi both would be better cars for the same money IMHO.

i also agree that 35K is too much for this car. I am looking to replace my 00' GTI VR6. If VW offered the Golf VI R at 30K, I'd buy it in a heartbeat

But with it's pricing, I find myself drifting towards the 2011 WRX

35k I would go for the 370z. I always considered the GTI in the sub 30k hot hatch category along with the WRX and Mazdaspeed 3 though my choice would be the WRX which should hopefully come along early next year. :D

If there are other AWD, manual, two-door, hatchbacks out there let me know. Otherwise shut it. The Evo is a plastic, cheap POS. Im an old man, not a boy racer. The WRX (or a used E46 M3) was my backup plan. I went through this same process back in 2002 when i got the 337. I drove the STi and Evo, both felt cheap, poorly built, but fun. The 337 was pure style and quality. That is what i have found this time around (i have driven a WRX and was not impressed enough to consider it above the R). No way i would ever waste money on an Evo. They are just begging for dragon/chinese letter graphics. I hate those things. Also, why would i buy a 4-door when the things are going to be shut 99.9% of the time? A hatch is far more useful to me.

Ok, back on topic, i am not going to have two cars. My intention was to pick something up and use it as a trade-in, or sell it before/after the R arrives. I guess i was hoping that someone could offer advice on how to get the dealer to work with me. Short term lease, discounted used car with guaranteed price on trade-in, or something.

I still beleive the cheapest option is to buy the cheapest beater that you can that will last you for 5 months (which shouldn't be too hard) and privately sell it for what you bought it for since it's only been 5 months.

I mean if you're willing to go bare bones minimum for the beater you can probably pick one up for 1-2k and sell it for that much. I'm not sure if a dealer can get you a better deal than that.

I agree with you 100% on the wrx/evo...plastic feeling. I'd get the new R myself, but I really want a 3.0tdi a4 quattro...just going to have to wait :).

pick up a old mk4 golf 2.0L 5 speed ... make you happy when you get the AWD R with some power!

After careful consideration, (thanks for the input) i am going to pick up an old GTI. I live in a downtown loft, so it wont be a "project" car, but would it be better to pick up a VR6 or a 4? Keep in mind, i will be selling it after the R arrives.

I don't know if the Audi S3 is available in NA, but that is another 3Dr, AWD, Hatch.

I think it's better you get a cheap car, but something you can keep as a second car. So not something too cheap.

Great choice! I am partial to the Mk1s because of how light they are but finding one is all but impossible-clean that is.
Since your gonna sell it get a mid 90s high mileage 4 since they have already depreciated down to chump change. Hell Jettas can be had for 1k here in indy.

I take some offense to that... but then I realize some interior quality is gladly given up when evos are as capable as they are.

I think the VW is a nice car, but out of the box, the only advantage it has is its soft touch interior materials.... sorry, I'll take the evo, or the STI if I want hatch. the R is what should have been released when the 337 hit showrooms about 10 yrs ago....

To be fair he did say that he's past the age where one would trade comfort for performance. I hear the evo is pretty harsh on pavement no?

If you want something nice and are willing to spend, you can pickup a lease for the time frame you want. There are a couple sites which allow folks to search for others to transfer leases, and you can search for 5/6 months remaining. Pick any car your heart desires.

You'll save on taxes and the hassle of resale, or if you were to trade it in, the dealer will likely give you a bunch less than what you paid.

I'm 33, just bought my evo a little over a yr ago. Think I am getting to that same age in the not too distance future. The car is just way too much fun to be concerned with a few squeeks and rattles and harsh ride -> mine is expecially harsh with KW v3 coilovers.

If I am spending big'ger money (30k+) on a AWD turbo'd compact car, I want the best performing car, not the car that has the nicest dash and door panels. I will bet the recaros in the evo or the stock STI seats are every bit as good as what comes in the VW...

I am really not knocking the R... I think it is a great car, but not when you compare bang for the buck against an evo or STI... both are just much more capable cars. If I want a comfortable AWD setup, I am buyng an audi, not a VW

Stock STi seats are terrible. Subaru really is designing for fat-ass Americans. The Recaros in the Evo are awesome.

I thought VW used Recaro...or is that a distant memory from the 80's GTIs?

I wish Subaru had a factory Recaro option for the WRX as I hate its current seats. I flip flop all the time about my next car, but I'm currently debating between the WRX, 370Z or holding out for the BRZ. Although a few weeks ago I was test driving a Prius.. go figure.

I like the seats in both the Z and WRX, but the Z could use a Recaro-style seat the most. It does a decent job of holding you in, but could be better. I like the WRX seats (Limited) and find them extremely comfortable. The Recaro option would be great, but for longer trips or just around the city the existing seats are really nice. The only complaint is the lack of lumbar adjustment, but they are comprtable despite this.
