Again I'm all about the best for the buck car as cars are horrible in depreciating.

30k gets you a Stang GT, Entry 370z as my top two RWD candidates

Want a 4 door, WRX, MS3, wish I could still include the G8.

35k Id go with GT with sport options/LSD/Brembos
or EVO/STI

not even including roadsters as I doubt its even a consideration

Stock STi seats are terrible. Subaru really is designing for fat-ass Americans. The Recaros in the Evo are awesome.

I thought VW used Recaro...or is that a distant memory from the 80's GTIs?

I think JDM sti's get recaros...

how's this?
evo IX recaros in a subie:

Mitsubishis are a total crap brand but whether there are other "If there are other AWD, manual, two-door, hatchbacks out there let me know" cars like that or not, who really cares, $35k for a golf is insane as mentioned.

I take some offense to that... but then I realize some interior quality is gladly given up when evos are as capable as they are.

I think the VW is a nice car, but out of the box, the only advantage it has is its soft touch interior materials.... sorry, I'll take the evo, or the STI if I want hatch. the R is what should have been released when the 337 hit showrooms about 10 yrs ago....

The Evo and WRX are both sedans. Thats two more doors than i want and will use. Yes, they both have a few extra horses, but they both lack the fit and finish of an R. Plus, the R should see some easy ponies with simple mods. How many horses would a chip add? 30? 40?

Also, you are right, this is the car i wanted 10 years ago. ;-)

wrx and STI can be had in a hatch... having two or four doors isn't a big deal IMHO.

so you get 30-40 hp out of a chip... now you are on par HP wise with the other two that come that way out of the box. I don't think I have to tell you how easy it is to get power out of an evo...

fit and finish is nice and all, but we are still talking about compact 4 banger, AWD cars. You want fit and finish you buy a nice A4, not a golf. To me, it is out of place, over priced, and underpowered. 10 yrs ago or 10 grand less and VW had a winner. in today's market it is simply outgunned and will be bought by a relative few VW enthusiasts willing to spend 35 grand on a golf.

Price aside, I don't think it's a bad car, but for the money, I would opt for something else

If by "a relative few VW enthusiasts" you mean every R VW intends on bringing over here will be snapped up quickly, then sure. It was never intended to be any sort of volume seller. It is the 'halo' Golf.

It would be out of place to you…you are lumping all compact 4 banger AWD cars into one group as if they are built the same, feel the same, drive the same, etc. They don't. Power and performance is fun on paper but cars are more than that. My buddies WRX was very fast and fun but let me tell you…it was built like a tin can and felt like one. I'd never own one no matter how fast it went.

and the golf R that is released in Europe will have more power than the US version... we get a neutered "halo" golf.

cars are definitely more than what they list on paper. I can't necessarily speak for the wrx, but I can speak about the evo. sure a some what cheap interior, but I have never driven a car more fun. I have drvien the STI as well. the exhaust note alone is enough for some to fall deeply in love with the car. I don't find the golf a particularly good looking car, and having a better interior doesn't interest me when the performance isn't living up to the price tage... but then again, there are people that have different priorities than I have

GTI engine block can't handle much more power. My friend modded his and he devoloped a leak from the head gasket. he was also having overheating issues at the track. Warped his brake calipers too. LOL

in all fairness, keeping the head on isn't necessarily indicative of the block being weak. more-so a factor of a bad tune, too much boost, a need for stronger head gasket and most likely just a need for stronger head studs. You start upping the boost and keeping the heads on can be an issue with any car. and overheating, well, just add an oil cooler and upgraded radiator if you plan on tracking just about any car

I will guess the R will be close to its limits considering VW considers the US as a "hot market" and that is the reason it is coming in with less power than the euro version.

I did some google'ing about the R... probably the most pathetic thing I read:
The addition of all-wheel drive, along with the bump in power, will likely make the Golf R a serious contender against competitors like the Subaru Impreza WRX and the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

^^^ great, so for 10 grand more, you compete with the WRX and the ralliart and not the STI or Evo

You could rent something or look into a short term lease, but buying a used beater and the reselling it is your best bet if your only keeping the car for 5 months.

I like this idea. Rent/lease a similar vehicle, take out your aggressions, beat on it, get it out of your system (Or at least some of the aggressions).

Less chance to damage the NEW car ;)

I find your defense and explanation of Evo subpar interior rather amusing. You're saying it's OK because performance makes up for it. Yet you take the complete opposite stance when it comes to Corvette. :D

New VWs are garbage. I would take a reliable car, with an interior like a mid 2000's Cobalt over a VW that will have gremlins forever.

VWs are great for about 30k and then they go to hell.

the corvette is 50+ grand and it doesn't even have a competent seat to hold the driver and a dash put together by fisher price.

The evo doesn't necessarily have subpar interior... just not the best. the car is a true performer and doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. The seats are good, and the dash doesn't look like it was pulled from a toys-R-us catalog

Its funny because my mid 2000 cobalt and every one that ive driven drives and feels like its going to fall apart at any minute. Hell my 2005 Cobalt had a tendency to just um....turn off on its own.

My two VWs since then? Not a single problem.

that isn't an example of VW's quality... more so just an example of GMs lack of quality.

if your 2000 cobalt was a POS, why would you buy a 2005?
