Well then it sounds like you should be okay. What did the last email from corporate say? As per JS80's question (and IIRC they shouldn't require your SS and if they didn't get it) you really don't have much to worry about regarding a $200 bill. RaistlinZ is correct - the posts regarding getting a laywer are plainly ignorant.

Edit:

j00fek, your post below mine got a chuckle out of me.

i received this email from their billing company in response to my email ( gold's gym does not do their own billing )

"There was no cancellation authorized by Gold's Gym. Due to your refusal to pay, we are unable to process a cancellation within the terms and policies they have given us to adhere to. Therefore, your account will be returned to Gold's Gym for disposition."

well at least it will drop off your credit report in 7 years. Did you sign a contract when you started going to golds gym?

Next time get it in writing or send a certified letter saying you are no longer a member, provided th contract lets you up and quit without penalty.

What did the email that was "looking good so far" say? 😱

this was from a member resolution specialist at gold's

"Unfortunately, I wouldn?t have any jurisdiction over the cancellation; I could only refer you to check your agreement and work with the gym in regard to getting it processed according to the terms of the contract. I don?t have access at all to your account, I?m sorry."

crap i am screwed. god i hate the man.

it hasn't been reported to any collection agency or anything. the billing office told me it hasn't affected my credit yet

and that I would be in to pay the remaining balance.

That implies that you were going to go and close out the account.

If you did, then they should not have kept billing you.

If you did not go in to pay the balance; then you implictly kept the account open.

ok so i paid for a credit report and i looked at it. and no where did i see the gold's gym account or anything resembling it or the 200 dollars i owed. does that mean i won?

No, they haven't sent it to a collection agency yet.

yeah thats what i thought. i then called their billing department and they said they no longer control my account...so you might be right i dunno

I had a problem with Gold's Gym once. I ended up taking it up with my credit card company and won. They key is you gotta be professional and document everything. The other thing I learned from that is to get things in writing and/or with an time stamp on email. Then you can always go back and reference it down the line. If you just talk to someone on the phone, usually you are out of luck.

Get it in writing!

in 2002 I trusted a former roomate to pay a phone bill for our apartment while I moved home for the summer. Long story short he never paid it and just this year in early 2006 it showed up in collections on my credit report.

I was NEVER contacted about the bill and the collections agency not once attempted to the contact me. WHen I called the collections agency they were VERY rude and when I tried to open a discussion with them about how they were reporting my address incorrectly to the big three they will constantly say "SIR your bad credit is not our problem will you be paying what you owe today." "I want your company to stop reporting a false address before I....." "SIR if your not going to pay then we are done, its not our companies responsibilty to clean up your credit" Click

called back three different times with the same bs conversation about how it was my fault they were reporting false information about me to the big 3.
