How is this news to any fans of Goldeneye? This is not a new thing. LOL.

Per the footnote on the article:

Update August 12th, 5:01PM ET: Clarified that GoldenEye: Source has been available throughout its development, but just this week received its first substantial update in more than three years.

I've never heard of this before, and I'm a fan of GoldenEye. And I'd imagine that people who play Goldeneye: Source haven't been actively checking their blog for 3 years with no updates in order to find out about this news update ;)

That's kinda my point. It's an ancient mod that's suddenly getting a bunch of attention like it's some new thing. It's been on ModDB since 2009. It's cool that they've revived it and all but you don't generally see old mods getting attention from anywhere other than mod sites.

So, I have downloaded and played it. I did play Goldeneye N64 a lot as a kid with my friends, so it was a nostalgic feeling for me.

One of the first things you notice is the lack of crossair during normal movement. You can still aim, but once you aim, you move slower but gain accuracy over long range. That makes sense, but it just felt weird initially not having a crossair while running around. It's just a function of modern FPS.

The game variety is fun, the characters skins are great, the game modes are surprisingly diverse. You can just sink in for 5 minutes or 2 hours. You don't have to have a lot of previous knowledge to start playing. It's awesome.

I'd certainly pay $5 on a Steam sale for this game. Getting it for free is even better.

Oh dear. This is going to be very, very bad for my free time :D

Unfortunately, they don't have the resources for a full solo remake, but multi-player is ready to go thanks to Valve's Source engine:

Download it here:

Ive had that game for some years now, seems this is actually an update, which the game could use. Too bad Steam does not automatically update the game itself.

I doubt they can charge anything due to licensing.

All you need is good marketing! And thanks to Youtube, it's free!

It's cool because I've never heard of this before, but I loved playing multi-player Goldeneye back in HS. I really wish there was a single-player mode though...the trailer made it look like you could do levels & stuff like that, but they said it wasn't in the cards due to lack of manpower.

What are you referring to?
As soon as you start charging money, the creators of both the Source engine & Goldeneye (which I think Activision owns now since they released that one CoD version on consoles...) will be at your door... unless of course they gave them permission ahead of time. Unlikely.
