Going to vegas for New Years weekend

I'm leaving for vegas right after work in 3 hours from San Diego. I believe they shut down the strip at a certain time? Tips anyone? Where should we hang out, my 2 guy friends and I dont have a hotel til Sat night.
 
what is there to expect? i never been there during new years eve...
i also heard they close the strip at 10pm from any cars going in, how bad is the traffic gonna be getting in?
 
absolutely horrid. most people are already there, since a lot of casinos don't allow arrivals today, but the place is going to be packed.

traffic is always bad on weekends into vegas anyways.
