It's March Break and I have the opportunity of going to the gym today and work out. I'm hoping to try Stronglifts 5X5, however I can only work out once or twice this week then I gotta wait till the school year ends and summer starts. What exercises would you guys do if you were in my situation? I'm mainly going for fun and to meet a friend whom I haven't seen in a couple of years.

If you're serious about 5x5, then work on your form and forget about weight. It's not worth trying to do anything for two days if you're going to be sitting on your butt for the next two months. I'd focus on the deadlift, squat, and overhead press.

I remember you created a thread a long time ago about starting to lift. Did you ever start?

Sadly, I never got around to starting. This year's policy was changed because the supervisor had afterschool stuff to do, so hence no working out after school. Hopefully summer and next year will I have the opportunity to work out.

Squats and deadlift and overhead press. Will try to do those today. Now if only my friend will pick up her phone >.<

if you can only go once or twice this week and not again 'til summer, i'd just do an activity / sport.

Whatever you do, don't be one of those guys who goes there for fun and just ties up all the equipment while sitting there not lifting.

You can't find the money for a cheapo gym membership? $50 / month is probably doable and would mean better equipment and hours for you. I know it's hard to get started with a routine and things like money, schedules, and work can seem like great excuses, but they're ultimately just excuses.

If you're serious about lifting, you'll find a way to get into a gym. Why not ask the school if they can provide someone else for after-school lifting? I'm sure there are trainers locally available that are in need of hours, even if the pay isn't great.

Don't take the things I'm saying personally -- I just know how hard it can be to get started and I think it's foolish to squander six to eight months of lifting because of a scheduling conflict.

Don't even bother if you're not going to lift for months afterwards. My vote is to get a gym membership, mines $33 a month. Look into a park district gym, they are often in the $20's.

Well the school is $50/year...but yea, when I get serious I'll find a way. Besides, to me it's not foolish. Lifting to me is just like a past time kinda thing that I might do. I've been interested in working out ever since that fitness unit we did for gym last year. Been itching to feel that burn in my quads again, and I might actually get to experience it this Thursday when I go to the YMCA with my friends. We're just gonna hang and work out then maybe do some computer gaming afterwards.

@Tall. Park district gym = community centre gym?

@silverpig. I'll use the equipment for sure. Besides, I gotta get information on the membership for YMCA if I'm serious bout joining a gym. Plus I need volunteer hours otherwise I wouldn't be able to graduate.

Just to have some fun on Thursday, I'm planning to incorporate both machines and barbell training. I'll definitely have squats and will try to do deadlifts and bench press, as well as the other exercises if possible. I plan to do some machine/dumbell work as well, such as leg extensions and bicep curl. I just miss that direct burn on my quads. Then maybe we'll finish off with some basketball before we play on the computer at one of our place.

Btw, is it normal to get boners when working out? Sometimes I get one just thinking bout working out...

I think we've been over this before, but seriously, try some body weight exercises. Instead of curls, try some chin ups.

Dude, keep that boner tucked in, under, whatever the hell you have to do.

Came back from the gym. Man was it fun and tiring. Here's what I did:

5X5 squats with just the bar
5X5 deadlifts with 60lbs
5X5 bench press with just the bar
Leg Extensions
Leg Press
Ab Machine
Standing Calves Raises
Pull Ups and Chin ups

Hope I had correct form or near correct form on them. I definitely tried going to parallel on the squats and it was so difficult balancing the weights. It definitely hit my quads hard by the beginning of the 2nd set. Heck I was barely walking when I finished. I felt my biceps and triceps working as well during the bench press, more so my triceps.

I was gonna do some curls and stuff, but I didn't lol. I didn't do much chin ups/pull ups. Did a total of 5 of those....It's so hard!

I obviously did more lower body than upper body work today, but I really don't care. It was just to have fun and hang with friends, and getting myself into working out again. Maybe it's time to search around for memberships and what not...

You know, my body is feeling tired all over, especially my quads and biceps.

Today's Friday, and my quads still feel shot. My biceps feel a bit better than yesterday. Is this normal?

Also, when I was doing squats, I had a hard time with just the bar. When I put my hand around the bar, my upper back and shoulders were hurting like hell during the first set. I know I have bad posture, but would my bad posture have led to that pain while squatting?

Yes, this is normal. If you stick with it, your soreness will diminish quite a bit.

Bad posture CAN give you pain while squatting, yes. It sounds more like you're just sore or are placing the bar in an awkward play or just aren't used to having a bar on your back. All of these things can cause soreness on the traps/shoulders.

You can try doing shoulder dislocations. It's nothing like it sounds, don't worry. It will loosen up your upper back and shoulders. Start with a VERY wide grip and go slowly. Progressively move your hands closer together as you loosen up.

You can do these before working out as part of your warm up (dynamic stretching), after your workout, and even on days that you don't work out.

I've done a bunch of these before and they do seem to help. I only do them when I remember though, but at least it's better than nothing. It's pretty hard trying to go like around the world from the front to the back without letting go of that broomstick. Just thinking about it makes me go like "wtf, how the hell can he do that?!"

My legs are sore to the point where its a pain just walking around. I definitely never felt that kind of soreness back when I worked out last year. But then again, I was doing all machines....

I think I'm getting that pain while squatting from the awkward placement of the bar and the fact that there's 40/45lbs of weight on my back all of a sudden, as well as having bad posture.
