That little kid was retarded . . .

"You let her out?!? You weren't supposed to let her out!"

Well why the hell didn't you say so, you little dork!?! Hell, even Haley Joel Osment was more helpful than you were! All you did was draw some stupid pictures. Grr.

The whole part about the girl dying as a result of heart failure (when it looked like she had gotten a bad case of ebola) was stupid, too.

"She never sleeps!" Gimme a frickin' break . . . my coworkers and I were tossing back and forth about horror movies at lunch the other day. Tis the season, after all. And really, to survive any horror movie, all you need is a well-stocked briefcase.

I can't remember all of the stuff we came up with, but some of the stuff was like . . .

1. Canteen full of holy water
2. Various religious symbols
3. Twelve-gauge
4. Chainsaw
5. Wooden stake (hot blonde optional)
6. .44 Magnum loaded with silver bullets
7. Satellite cell phone (to avoid those inconvenient "No Service" messages)
8. Mirror
9. Bag of sunflower seeds

. . . we had a bunch more but I can't remember the rest. ;)

I just HATE stupid horror movies.

Exactly my point - why didn't the kid take the time to tell her that BEFORE it happened?

"Oh, BTW, mom - the little girl is a demon b!tch from Hell. Don't let her out of the well."
"Okay, son."

but if the kid told the mom NOT to let her out.... there will be NO SCARED-THE-REMAINGING-SHIT-OUT-OF-ME ending!!!

i'm so bothered by the movie.... geez.....

btw who is the actress who portrayed the little girl?

again: this movie is so fvcked up scary...

i can't think of any other movie that scared me to this extent... 2 days now and still getting goosebumps when thinking of certain scenes....

i thought the beginning scene with the girl who died in the closet, from being "scared".... that was fvcked UP!!!! that just sprung up on you! THey didn't even give you a chance to prepare yourself or anything...

damn this is a great story.

I watched all RINGU movies (they have a couple of it I believe and I watched them all in one night) several years ago. But when I watched it today in theatre it freaked me out even more. I understand the story more in this american version, and having it on big screen just crank up the scary factor about 5 times.

Very nice movie. Had to turn on all the lights in the apartment and find a way to sleep without dreaming of the movie.....

I just got back from seeing this movie, and I am scared sh!tless right now. There was something about The Ring that scared me more than almost every other scary movie I've seen...I'm not sure what it was, but it was a different type of scary. Geez, even the ladders were scary. I hope I can sleep tonight!

For those who like horror movies, you guys should check more Japanese horror movies! I mean, most of them are awfully freaky! I watched a few movies other than the Ring series and I was always bothered with the scenes at least for one night. Brrr ...

can anyone think of another american movie that is adapted from its asian version? I just can't think of any good american scary / eerie movies like this, but have watched many good asian (chinese, japanese) ones.

personally i give it a 10 / 10.... (go ahead and flame me, see if i care. ) :)

Not quite "horror", but a LOT of movies were re-made from its Asian counterparts - the big ones I can think of right now are all from Akira Kurosawa.
Yojimbo was the "inspiration" for A fistfull of Dollars (the movie that started spaghetti westerns), Last man standing,
Seven Samurai was the "insperation" for The Magnificent Seven, Battle Beyond the Stars,
and . . ..
The Hidden Fortress "inspired" George Lucas into making a little known-movie called Star Wars. ;)

decent lil twist at the end though.

not really alot of gore to talk about though (not as though all these movies need gore to be scary)

heh from what i've read the new ring is actually an improvement:p

its not like a "Jason/haloween/krueger" movie if thats you want. its got a good plot, very good cinematography and is just a great story:)

yes its creepy:)

i wanna see the original japanese one too:)

anyways she's like nicole kidmans younger sister, yummy:)

I've heard that the original Japanese one is more gory and much better.

For anyone who's in NYC, they're showing all 3 Ringu's (the japanese ones: Ringu 0, Ringu, and Ringu 2) on the west side (Walter Reade Theater).

more gory usually = lame.

if you need gore to scare people your just unsophisiticated. I mean, after all the lame slasher flicks I think the world has seen enough gore.

Also, I just cant seem to ge afraid of movies where the spoken languaged is japanese... I guess the look, sound and feel is so foreign to me that I cant help feeling like godzilla is going to pop up and roar, or they are going to cut to some animated scene where all the characters are tiny and doing silly things

man, did I love that movie, and a lot of people are raving about it over on HTF too......it's not supposed to be pure shock thriller as most movies are these days, this one's eerie and despite being a little slow in the middle, the suspense is really thick throughout the entire movie. I liked it.

I never understand when people say movies are 'slow' it makes me think the majority of the population is all hopped up on joo joo beans and has the attention span of a dead koala.

I think your right on. I think alot of the people that didnt like it are gore junkies hopped up on lame slasher films. They dont really have the emotional depth to be disturbed or moved by anything more sophisticated than 'jack-ass'

SPOILER ALERT!

Originally posted by: CptObvious

In the original Sadako (Samara) came out of the TV in a dark, gloomy room...the darkness added greatly to the claustraphobic feel of the room, you get that "cant get away" feeling....BUT when she does come out, she crawls around very slowly, giving the Japanese Noah character ample time to escape...The dark small room was a better setting for this scene, but the speed at which she moved made it a bit less scary

The remake sets this in a brightly lit, HUGE loft apt, which takes away from the original Dark scene....BUT makes up for it with Samara essentially warping 2x to end up directly in front of Noah...so they achieve the "cant get away" feeling, but with different techniques...Noah had a football field to escape, but was cutoff twice with her quick movements. Had the remake been in a smaller room with less light, it would have been close to prefect.
I think this is a good example of why the Ring scared the pants off me and continues to creep me out. The scene above has the effect of removing the comfort of light. I'm a little embarassed to admit this, but in the past, I have sought comfort by falling asleep with the lights and TV on. Well . . . thanks to this movie, I have lost that avenue  She's gonna get you even in broad daylight BWAHAHAHA!

Also, there were only a few scenes of sudden scares and gore in the movie, but many scenes where I was on edge because of the POTENTIAL scare. I thought the filmmaker was clever that way. I don't think anything scare really happened in the dark, except when Rachel fell into the well.

BTW, here's a link to a site explaining how animals were not harmed during the filming of the Ring:
Humane Association

Apparently, there were special handlers for the horse, maggots, and centipede. The crabs weren't so lucky though--they got eaten!

Yeah. I liked the fact that the last sequence took place in the daylight too since it removed that comfort layer. Of course that was also tied to into the timing with the "false ending" where the mother's comforting her son the next morning and then WHAM! It ain't over now immediately cut to Noah while our mind begins to realize he's about to be toast.

If that scene had been shot at night or in a dark room probably could have been a little scarier (especially if they had built it up with that foreboding mood that permeates this whole film.) But the sudden shifting of gears from the false ending to this simply demanded that it take place ASAP in the chronology of the story. So morning it is :)

On a side note, I found an interview with the director of "The Ring", Gore Verbinski. This guy also did "The Mexican" a movie which most people didn't seem to like, but I loved the cinematography of that one; not the sequences with Julia Roberts in Las Vegas which the B crew shot, but all the main scenes revolving around Brad Pitt's character in Mexico. The styling of the shots in those scenes was very well done IMO. Anyway. I thought I remember him mentioning the possibility that there would indeed probably be more of this series coming evenutally. But unfortunately, he said wouldn't be directing any of them (he said he actually didn't enjoy working on suspense/horror like this as it can get very depressing over the course of several months.) I haven't seen the Japanese versions yet, but regardless, I thought the visual style in this one was very impressive.

ok i got the japanese version - the original version - from a friend...

it's been sitting in the drawer for about 2 weeks now... still have not watched it yet.... Been too busy lately... and also, it's a little too disturbing to watch it by myself late at night in my small room...

i wonder if it will be scarier, or less scary.
