Going to San Francisco this summer for vacation

Ok

Here are my options and plan. I currently have around 80,000 points with my bank and I can select the following hotels to stay at from August 6-10.

Sheraton - Fisherman's Wharf
Cathedral Hill
Hilton - Union Square
Sir Francis Drake

From the 10-13 we are going to stay at the Intercontinental since I get a discount for being a government employee.

So from those hotels above which would you choose?

I just recommended the Sheraton a few post ago. I have friends who work at the Sheraton-Fisherman's Wharf and I was told that overnight parking for guest run at least $40 bucks. I assume that the others might be around the same. Call to confirm.

Rent a bicycle from Fisherman's wharf thru the Marina Green into the Presidio. Head up to the Golden Gate Bridge and ride across it to the Marin side to Sausalito. Park and lock bike and walk around Sausalito. Board Ferry for SF and enjoy the view. When you disembark, it is a short 1-2 mile ride back to Fisherman's wharf. Simple and I have done it at least 20 times taking friends from out of town. They all loved it!
 
If you rent a car you can stay closer to the airport for less money. I stayed at the Hyatt there last year for four days and it was very nice. The only problem is that its about 20 to 30 from downtown, fisherman wharff, etc
 
I am staying at the Grand Hyatt in Union Square later this month. Looks like a really nice place.

We dont plan on renting a car well atleast not until the last couple days because we want to take a day trip up to Napa. With the prices of gas and what not it just doesnt make sense to rent a car, pay for parking and gas when SF has pretty good public transportation.

Right now I am trying to decide between Sir Francis Drake and the Sheraton. I like the Drake because of its location plus its near the trolly lines. However, the rooms look pretty small when compared to the Sheraton.

Why do you prefer the Sheraton over the others?
 
Stay at the Orchard Hotel, its around ~$200/night. I stayed there in 2005 and it is a PERFECT location and a beautiful hotel.

On Trip Advisor - Rated #4 out of 238 hotels in San Francisco, as well as the in the 2008 Travelers Choice for Best Luxury.

I narrowed it down between Sir Francis Drake and the Orchard. Any opinions either way on both hotels? The Sheraton was recommended above but my government rate isn't available at the time I'll be in SFO.

The orchard looks nice from the reviews on trip advisor and wanted to get more opinions on it and the Drake before I made my final decision.

I've never stayed at either one, but going by their websites and Tripadvisor, I would pick The Orchard. The Drake does not look like my type of place at all.

Have fun in SF. I'll actually be there at the exact same time as you, but we're staying at the Westin since they are doing a 3rd night free deal.

Well, I have finally made my decision. I wanted to go with the Orchard Hotel because of the great reviews on Trip Advisor but looks like most of the days are not available.

The plan now is to stay at the Intercontinental from August 6-9 and then the Orchard Garden from the 9-13.
 
Well, my plans fell through. As I was waiting for my points this month to come in the point totals of the Orchard Garden almost doubled. It went from 76,000 points to 124,000 points even though the actual money rates did not increase. 🙁

However the Intercontinental rates stayed the same and I just booked from the 9-13 there with my points and used my government discount for the same hotel from the 6-9. So I will be staying there the whole time.

Next up is to get the tickets for the Giants/Dodgers game and the night tour of Alcatraz.

Edit: The Intercontinental was rated #17 on trip advisor.
 
This question has been asked many times. The search function should give you dozens of posts, but there seems to be only a few results. Go figure.

Just keep in mind that anything taller than the fourth floor is impossible for the firemen to reach with their ladder trucks.
 
I'd try an AYH youth hostel. There's a bunch of them in the city. Call the one at Fort Mason in San Francisco and ask around.

These are the ones where you'll meet people, have a place to cook if you want and are cheap, clean and central. No drugs or alcohol, just do that outside.

I usually stay in them in big cities. SF has a bunch.
