i was thinking of raising a cat, and i got a chance today and i took it.

going to get a 3day old kitten... but this is my first experience with a cat and don't know where to start.

any info/tips/ raising a kitten would be really appreciated

i'd keep her indoor.. should a get a sandbox first for her peep/poop ?

it isnt terribly hard to litter train a cat. the kitten is going to be very very dependent on you for affection for the 1st few months. And the first few months will help to determine its reliance on you. LOve it but dotn over love it. Go ahead and set up a litter box, most cats will find it and use it automatically, just be sure to reward the kitten when it successfully uses the litter box (treats/positive reinforcement...petting it saying good boy/girl. Really it is just common sense. Get some toys for it play with or if you dont have money the best toy for a cat can be homemade

If you keep a cat indoors it tends to become restless and destructive. I'd get some toys and equipment for it to scratch so it doesn't start scratching up your chairs and rug.

Edit: I'd get it spayed or nutered as soon as possible, males will spray and mark their territory and females will get all wierd when they go into heat.

Take a wire coat hanger, unravel it so it is just a long stick, take some tape and roll it around one end several times, hold one end in your hand and allow the cat to play with the taped end. The cat will go crazy for it and it will cost you no money to make it. I have raised over 15 cats and every last one has gone crazy for this homemade toy.

Three DAY old? Without its mother? You'll have to bottle feed it, as it can't eat or drink or do anything for itself at that age. It's eyes won't be open, and it won't be able to walk, much less use a litter box. You'll have to clean that up yourself (hello papertowls).

I'm seriously hoping you meant 3 week or something, as 3 days is just a little too young to be away from its mommy.

Now, if it's 3 weeks, that's a different story. I'd stay with soft foods for then, keep it on canned foods, maybe some soft kitten non-cannedish food. Try to get it to learn how to drink water out of a dish, if it won't learn, mix some milk or something into its food to keep it from dehydrating. If you start it with a litter box right away, it should naturally learn how to use it. If it crys or acts like it "needs to go", you might try just setting it in the litter box at first to get it used to the idea.

Have fun! 🙂

3 day old? That sounds real young. Is it weaned from its mother yet? If not, you best plan on feeding it. You will have to actually feed it then.

Litter box is simple. Just put them in, and scratch it a few times. Every cat I ever had hit upon this right away. (I have had over a dozen so far.) Just be sure to clean it regularly. Depending on the size of the litter box compared to your cat, you might get away with just scooping it every day. But even if you do that, make sure to change litter at least once a week. I would recomend at least twice a week. (Lets face it, would you want to use your bathroom if you couldn't flush but once a week? 😛)

As for food: Go the extra mile and get good food for him/her. It will save you trouble in the long run. (And expensive vet bills.) Science diet is a good brand. Also, look for low/no ash content. Ash causes urinary problems in cats - particularly males.

Look into getting the cat spade or neutered. No I am not big on this, but it helps both of you in the long run. You really do not want a male cat marking everything. :disgust:

Declawing is optional. But it is something you should consider. Again, it isn't one of my favorite things... ... But do a little research on it. There are two procedures I know about. One, they just remove the claws. Simple, and comparatively painless. But it will have to be repeated. The other, the vet breaks the knuckles. This really bums me out. But it may be the only way to deal with your cat if they get into clawing up your furniture. Also, every vet worth their salt will tell you that you only need to declaw the front. This is correct. If your vet tells you otherwise, go somewhere else.

As for toys. Shoe boxes, and crumpled up papers should be good for you for a long time. Also keep an eye on your small items. (Candy, pills, watches, etc.) Some cats just love to get into this stuff. In the future you might get into buying things specificly for the cat. WATCH OUT FOR TOYS WITH LITTLE ITEMS THAT CAN COME OFF!!! Like little fuzz ball noses and such. If it comes off, and the cat swallows it, the cat will die. I have had a cat die this way. No fun. Also, look out for getting the "Jingles Balls." Not so much a health hazard for your cat, but for you. 😛 These are plastic ball "cages" with a bell inside. Cats love them. But they have a habit of leaving them where you can step on them with your bare feet! 😀 (Kind of painful.) Cat nip is a must, but I recomend waiting a few years to introduce your cat to it. And if you can swing it, actually growing cat nip is the best. (It smells kind of like peppermint when it is fresh.)

The rest is pretty much common sense. The better you treat your cat in the early months, the better it will treat you for your whole lives.

Enjoy! 🙂

3 days old?! You should be looking at getting one at about 8 weeks of age. At 3 days old, the kitty won't be able to use a litterbox yet. You'll have to stimulate it to use the bathroom.

Are you really getting one that young?

It'd also need to be bottle fed every few hours 24/7.

I'd recommend against declawing. Imagine having your fingers cut off at the first joint. Many cats can turn into biters if they're declawed, and have behavioral issues. It's also considered so cruel in some places that it's been outlawed. If you don't want to take the risk, don't get a cat.

Too early for spay or neutering but definitely keep it in mind. Look for any programs sponsored by your humane society to reduce the cost. An unneutered male tomcat will be your worst enemy if they mature before you neuter him. Female cats are not much better if solitary, as when they go in heat they'll want you to penetrate them 😱

Just give it a LOT of attention. We always showered our kittens with it and now they've turned into nice cats, as opposed to use the useless cats a lot of people have - you know, the kind that give cats a bad name.

A kitten probably shouldn't be taken away from its mother until about 8 weeks.

I hope that what you mean is that the kitten you'll be adopting is only 3 days old right now, and you'll be taking it only when it becomes old enough.

Please don't take it away from its mom yet.

Too early man, WAY too early. Wait a few weeks, so that she/he's a bit more developed. You're gonna be feeding it with an bottle at 3 days.

I hope you meant 3 weeks and not 3 days. 3 day old kittens are pretty much helpless and will require bottle feeding. It can be done, since my cat at my parents house was abandoned by its mother and raised in some kid's room with a bottle. This doesn't always work though, since we tried doing the same thing with another abandoned kitten and he died from a disease. It makes me sad to this day thinking about that little fella. He was such a sweet kitten.

When cats don't get their mothers milk, they don't get the antibodies that protects them from disease when they are young. Get it shots as soon as possible because at that age it could very easily die.

Get four bowls, two for water and two for food.
Change the water three or four times a day.
Wash one set of food and water bowls everday and make sure you rinse them properly.

Cats see the world by their sense of smell and hate eating and drinking from smelling bowls.

Alternate can food and dry food every day.

Change the litter box at least every two days.

Get a finger nail or hair brush and gently brush your kitten and cat every day. They love that

Change the water three or four times a day.
WTF? Nobody in the world - not a single human being on this planet or in the entire universe, heaven, or even hell changes their cats water bowl that often UNLESS they have serious psychiatric problems. 😛

I always feed my cat dry food. The vet says its just as good for cats as canned, and its easier, cleaner and smells better. I see no reason to buy canned food.

Too bad. Do you drink from the same glass withou washing it? Do you use the same plate to eat off without washing it?

Same glass? If it was water, yes I often will. I have a styrofoam cup that sits by my desk and I replace it every couple of days, but otherwise just fill it with ice/water. It takes more than 6 hours for water to go stagnant. Have you ever had a fish? Did you change its water every day?

Honestly, if you're changing your cat's water 3-4 times a day you might want to see a psychiatrist and ask him about obsessive compulsive disorder.

Yes, actually. What's wrong with using the same cup for a few days if it's only had water in it?

I'd say you have some sort of OCD if you wash your cup after each time you drink some water out of it. 😛

Wait, do you wash it with water? What about THAT water. It's dirty! Must use distilled water!

Yep, give your cat "forced love". Once it has no front claws it will find it difficult to escape from your clutches when you try and give it attention, whether it likes it or not. It may wiggle, but as long as it's not screeching and what not you can continue to hold it. Then when it grows up it will actually start to like it 😀
