I'll be heading up to NY for Valentine's (2/12-2/16) and I'm wondering what places I should visit. She already has ballet and opera planned. And if you guys have any suggestions on where to go for a nice dinner and some scenic views around NYU. I want to at least suggest something instead of just letting her handle everything.

Also, do you guys know of any deals on plane tickets? I would prefer to leave LA the evening of 2/12 and to return on the 16th. I found some deals for for $150 but I'd have to leave on the evening of the 11th and return on the 17th, and I have tests on those days. It seems as though the "hot deals" are not offered Thursdays, Fridays or Mondays. The best deal that I found that fits my schedule was $200. It might only be $50, but as a student on a budget, I'd rather save on the ticket to have more to spend there.

Thanks.

EDIT: All set, thanks guys.

Well NYU is around SoHo, a great shopping area if you and the missus like that kind of thing. Romantic stuff may include a horse draw carriage ride around central park, they give a huge blanket to keep you warm. Places to eat, I'm not to sure about. Have fun!!!

i think there's a revolving restaurant in the marriott in times square. times square in general is cool.

it may be a little cold but the empire state building is cool for its panoramic views.

you could also do the circle line for a cruise around the island of manhattan. there may even be dinner versions of such cruises but i'm not sure.

a horse drawn carriage ride through central park is very touristy but can be quite romantic. it's also pricey, unfortunately.

little italy is nice to walk around for an impromptu dinner or dessert and it is near chinatown, south street seaport, ground zero, j&r electonics(yay!), battery park, the nyse, and the ferry for the statue of liberty.

you can also do a helicopter ride around the city.

that sounds pretty cool. do you have to make reservations ahead of time?

your last suggestion sounds pretty cool and there's a lot of stuff nearby. i'll have to pass on the helicopter ride though... :p

you do not have to make reservations for the horse drawn carriage rides. they have stands much like taxi stands where they sit there waiting for romantic couples. :)

Itll still be good in februaury...manhattan is an island so obviously anything in the summer is more fun when you deal with water. You have to go to times square obviously. Its only in like 70% of all the movies ever made.

Try to catch a taping of letterman @ the Ed Sullivan Theatre.

It not a long ride, I warn you, and it is about $40 for like 20 mins of a ride. However, if money may not be a huge issue, this is also one of the best things to do. You ride past taxis and people on the road, and you feel like king and queen. Just make sure you show up on the South end of Central Park, and you are sure to find them lined up for you.

A bit chilly for outdoor activities in NYC in Feb. Better off visiting the MET museum at Central Park, then heading over to Peter Lugers for the best steak you will ever eat.

Oh yea! Peter Lugers has some pretty nice steaks. But its not too chilly for the carriage ride, its actually quite warm inside. And if it is a little bit cold, a little cuddling inside the carriage won't hurt ;).

that i'm not sure about. as a rough guess i would have to say on the order of $50 but i've never done it myself so ymmv.

they usually have a line for people who don't have tickets like standby, in case there are no shows because they don't like to have empty seats.

another suggestion i just thought of is to walk around rockefeller center(~50th st and 5th ave) and around 5th ave. there is an ice skating rink in the middle where the huge christmas tree is and the stores on 5th ave may still have their christmas displays up in the windows.

there's also an ice skating rink in central park called wolman's rink or something like that.

how's the scenery? it sounds like there will be considerable activity around, so i might have to forego that.

If you are there friday morning you might be able to get on the today show. I think they film right there and always have a crowd on hand.

Definitely check out the Chuck Close exhibit at the Met. His stuff will blow you away.

Chuck Close special exhibition

Agree with Lugers, however you should make reservations well in advance and plan on spending $60 - $90 pp.

Yes, if you're a pathetic loser, and waving through a window, holding up signs to get on TV excites you, then by all means, go for it.

if you go there only eat the sushi, everything else at haru sucks the big one.

as for other foods. try lombardis pizza on spring st and mott, oldest pizzeria in the country. blue ribbon, and blue ribbon sushi on thompson street are also very good. cafe figaro(i forget which street) is a really chill cafe that is very popular near nyu...

You can check out Madame Tussaud's wax musuem at Times Square...Pretty cool.

Yeah, the horses are all lined up on Central Park South, from about the Plaza Hotel all the way to Columbus Circle. Place stinks to high heavens. ;)

Don't know if you're into this kinda stuff, but the Intrepid Aircraft carrier isn't too far away. It's a sea, air and space musuem now.

There's tons of stuff to do, it's NYC!

no there is not tons of things to do in nyc. we just have more of the same things any other city has...museums, bars, clubs, things like that...sigh. i find myself bored sometimes of the city.

on that note. chelsea piers? you can club some golf balls, go rock climbing...whatever...

Well I find myself bored too sometimes, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do. Whenever I want to find something to do I've never had a problem.

It's been several months since I visited NYC and I'm still recovering from my experience at the Soundfactory. I won't even describe what my eyes witnessed that evening/morning.
