Going to Mexico with an expired drivers license

So my drivers license expired on 12/24/06, my brithday. I renewed it on the DMV website on 12/20/06, but was sent to my Dad's house six hours away.

My friend's from my home town are staying wtih me and we want to go to Tijuana. I've been there many times and all you need to get back into the country is show a DL.

Do you think they'll care if mine is expired by five days? I have my San Diego State ID and my bank card as other possible IDs. I can even bring my social security card.

Gotta work tomorrow, so getting stuck in Mexico is out of the question.

Thoughts?

Go, have a good time. Be sure to see the donkey shows...The border patrol is very understanding...as are the mexican police...

I hope you like the food in the Mexican prisons...j/k...Take a passport if you have one instead. They want valid picture government ID's

You better have a birth certificate to go along with that.. I got crap when I had only a VALID license and no certificate. The only reason they let me across the border was because 4 of my buddies all had documentation and I was a young white college student obviously looking to get drunk on New Years.

This was a few years ago too I think they're more strict now.

I dont have a passport and the government ID is after Dec. 31. I think I read that the passport is only required when traveling to or from Mexico by air or sea, but I'm probably wrong.

I guess the consensus here is that it wont work.

You won't end up in jail as long as you have enough money on you to bribe whichever cop makes you pull over. Sad, but true.

you might need a passport as mentioned above.. some new rules.. better check.. at least if you can't come back, someone and bring you the passport a day later..

While the passport is not ryet REQUIRED, it will serve to get you back into the US...IIRC, an expired driver's license won't do it...going EITHER way.

Why chance it? Border security is already crazy enough when you have the proper and valid identification. All you are doing is setting yourself up for a headache when you want to get back into the US.

I want to make this perfectly clear since I dont think I articulated this, but I am not driving into Mexico with an expired drivers license. That would just be DUMB.

We're going to drive, park the car on the US side of the border and walk into Mexico.

An expired driver's license is NOT considered to be valid ID...

I had this argument with a cop one night when I was drunk at a bar and they wouldn't let my friend in because her license was expired. She said 'this is not a valid ID'. I said 'So, if she was found in a ditch you would ignore the license for ID purposes because it is expired?'

Don't worry, I knew the cops partner and had talked to her before. It was more of a friendly discussion that ended in laughs and her getting into the bar. 😛

i say go and post the consequences if hilarity ensues.

yes, go ahead and go, if you really thought you would end up in prison down there, you wouldn't try it

no balls if you don't go

If you're walking, I REALLY doubt you'll have any trouble. Last time I went to Mexico and walked, I went right through with nary a glance. This was in 7/05... Last July two friends and I drove through with driver's licenses with no issue whatsoever... They were call current, however. Worst case scenario you'd be detained while they verify your identity, you won't go to mexican prison.

I really dont think that I'll get thrown in prison. I'm thinkin the worst they can do to me is keep me in Mexico till the Consulate can confirm my identity. But if you guys dont think it'll work, then I'm not too excited to try it.

Sucks though, TJ with friends is a blast. Now we'll have to give our money to greedy American businesses and eat bad tacos.

This is what I am thinking.

We're going to walk to Mexico. They wont even check my ID until I try and come back into the US. Everytime I've been to Mexico, they only look at the DL and ask you what city you were born in or something like that.
