I used to own run old VW diesels. 1980's ones. Loved them. Told the wife to buy one. Got a 1996 VW Golf. Hated it right from the start and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Having problems is one thing but having the same problems that everybody is having year after year is another thing. Do a search on google for things like , seats breaking, windows dropping into the doors, door locks breaking and glove box doors breaking. When the door lock broke on the wifes door I went to get the replacement parts and I kid you not the parts guy at the dealership knew the part numbers off by heart and told me "might as well fix the other side, its gonna break also." Will never own another one again.

MKIII's were terrible cars. Their reliability (or lack of) records are well known.

MKII's were the shiznit. I owned two of them ('86 Scirocco, '86 Golf).

MKIV's have some minor issues that buyers should be aware of (like the window regulators). But that is true for the majority of today's cars.

If you want reliability, buy a Camry.

Have fun bending over in the VW service center with all the other dudes who don't want to look like 30 something year old fathers.

VW's north american operations are now the bastard child of the company. They do way more busines overseas, and that's what they are focusing on. The new Jetta was their big hope, and it's sucking on the sales floor. Same initial quality problems, and you can option one out to like 26 or 27k, although right now it's not an option. That's all the mother ship is sending across the ocean, and noone wants a 26k jetta. The dealers are pissed, and I heard they're taking it out on service center customers. Ok not really but most of that is true. I wouldn't tell you not to get a VW if I didn't think it was going to be a pain in the ass. if a GTi were even close in reliability to say a Corolla, it would be my dream car. There was a time when I wanted to like VW...

My wife had a '88 Golf and a friend of mine had a '92 Jetta (3 transmissions by 70k miles-he had no confidence in that car when he traded it in for a Honda). Both cars were utter crap. I'll never buy a VW as long as I live.

When the final assemble is in mexico, I would expect to have problems. However, the Passat and GTI are both built in Germany, and both are a good bit more reliable than the reg Golf and Jetta.

Well, the seller failed to tell me until I got out there that it was a salvage title. It had been repoed and she got it at auction. And at the price they were asking, I didn't even bother going any further.

Wait...they wanted 16.5 for a salvaged title?!?! Oh man...MAYBE 10k. But I'd NEVER pay 16.5k for something like that. Heck, for that price I'd consider selling you my 01 WE Jetta w/ Stg III Turbo Kit, other goodies, and less then 27,000 miles.

PIC

On second thought...no...I probably wouldn't. :D

That is a nice car.

I used to own an '02 GTI. The problems I had were pretty consistent with Antisocial's rant, but not to that extent.

The biggest problems I had were the window regulators (VW uses cheap plastic), and my CEL kept coming on for no reason at all. That, and there was one time where it came on with a legitimate excuse where the emissions wasn't working correctly.

Despite that, it was a blast to drive. I thought it was a great little car, and it gave me lots of memories. Alas, I gave it up for a Miata. I graduated from 20-somethings to 40-somethings, and I became a girl in the process.

HAHAHA...that's hilarous. Yeah, those window regulators are a PITA, but the nice thing is...they are covered under an extended warranty now. If they break, VW will fix them.

Yeah, I think the recall notice said for 12 years or something.

Thats a nice edition of the VW, as what to look for, the usual, body, dents, etc..test drive it for a while, make sure you really like it, ask if you can drive it around for a day, go somewhere far...

But I don't want to be seen as a thirtysomething father just yet.
I can't help but wonder exactly what image that protrays? Certainly not one of somebody who's into power, practicality, or bang-for-their buck. Maybe one of somebody who likes to waste money--definitely a better image than a 30's something father!

LOL. It sucked even without being a salvage. They'll never get that price for it.

Oh, and definately something other than a VW Turbo...least reliable cars you can buy.
Not to mention more turbo lack than you can shake a stick at. I've driven two of them and after you hit the gas at low RPM the delay is about 35 seconds to any actual power to the wheels.

Wrong. They have tiny turbos and peak torque comes in at around 1800 rpm. You must have been starting off in 3rd gear...

Once you learn how to drive a turbo car, you can eliminate the lag mostly.

I have 2002 GTI and have had no problems, except the Windows regulators..
One bad point.. the 1.8 Turbo requires high Octane Gas..
