Yea you're kind of short on time... I took most of mine in one go, and I ran a fever for a day. The typhoid pills take a week, and you need to end them 1 week before you go.

Well, do this - forget the pills, its kind of too late for them to do much good - instead drink lots of Tonic water while you're there. The quinine helps wards off Malaria. Don't touch any animals while you're there (which you shouldn't do anyway). Don't be hooking up with any prostitutes. But you must absolutely bring Cipro and Immodium. You can get the Cipro from a passport health place or from your doctor. At first sign of dysentery, take 1 pill of each and continue for about 3 days. Then you'll be fine the rest of the trip.

You can get a typhoid vaccination in a single shot. IIRC the only difference between that and the pills are you're vaccine lasts a couple years less, but still lasts a couple years. Hep A is also a single shot to cover you and then you take it 6 month later again if you want to have vaccination for a lifetime.

Yea he can do that, and probably not a bad idea. I'm still warning him of a 1 day fever though - so don't do it the night before the 15 hour plane flight.

I'll look into the shots. I guess I will try to stay within the hotel circuit when I eat though.

I won't worry too much about getting ripped off a few bucks. It'll help them out more than me.

My VZW Blackberry says its a world phone and has a SIM card slot. I think it should work.

It would cost you $2.50 + a minute to use the World Edition BB in India. You have to stop at a Verizon Store to buy the SIM card (could be free but you're have to ask) and have them unlock the feature on the acct so you can roam.

Well since its your first time there, and it doesn't sound like you'll be going back any time soon, I say don't waste your time on hotel food. Get out, try new things. To be honest, the few times I got sick, was on hotel food (ice or lettuce), not on street food.

Yes, the phone will work fine.(make sure it has a 900mhz band)
Just make sure its unlock.
Ask a friend who has ATT or Tmobil and take their sim card and plug in yours.
It should work right away if its unlock.
If not ask Verizon to unlock for you.
They should do it if you've been a long time customer.
Do not buy a sim card anywhere here or at the airport.
You will find plenty at a local shop and they are cheap.
They will do all the work for you.

Thanks for all the advice on the BB. I will go to the VZ store tomorrow.

I went to our company's in house doctor and he was incredulous that I was leaving in a week without shots. He said it may take over a week just for the vaccinations to take effect. He suggested I do it anyway. I have to get something like 4 or 5 shot at $100 a pop! I guess I will be bending over tomorrow.

no matter what you see or hear about india, nothing will prepare you when the plane door opens and india hits you. the smell, the noise, the amount of people. its chaotic.

i couldnt wait to leave. the best part of my holiday was the flight home
