going for a week for fun.
anyoen know any good places to see
or good shops to buy stuff?

i figure they should have some fun computer hardware

bring plenty of condoms, and stay away from dark alleys 😉

just kidding, don't know jack about HK. in any case, check into import/export laws so you don't get into any trouble when you try to bring all your loot back home.

For computer stuff:

Shum Shui Po Golden Shopping Centre
Mong Kok Computer Centre
Wan Chai Computer Centre
298 Hennesey Road Computer Centre

Contact me if you need any help.

Andy should write a FAQ on visiting Hong Kong and he should be a tour guide for all the visiting AT'ers. 🙂

thanks guys,
i'll be sure not to drink the water.

DON't DRINK THE WATER

Hong Kong is not an undeveloped or developing country, the water is safe to drink, just remember to use filter and boil it, don't drink the tap water directly. If you're afraid, drink imported bottled water all the time.

Only buy cheapy or fancy computer stuff from Hong Kong. For normal stuff, you can buy it cheaper in the US with hot deals or rebates.

Be careful of DOA parts too...last time I visited, my sisters that live there tried to get me to build them a new computer within 3 days. So I did, only to run into some funky error while installing Windows. Never was able to figure it out before I left, and they had to get another guy to come in and look at it. Turns out the RAM was dead.

So unless you have a way to test parts right away, I wouldn't buy computer parts from HK and bring it back, period. And parts cost just as much if not more than U.S. prices for parts. I'd look more into cool electronic gadgets and gizmos while you're there if I were you. I feel like a kid in a candy store everytime I walk into those little electronic shops along the streets.
