Going to Hawaii in February. Any good suggestions for cheap air tickets or package deals?

Not sure about package deals, but ticket prices seemed to fluctuate from week to week on Orbitz when I went two years ago. Where are you flying out of?

which isalnds? how many?
the past 2 years we have had great luck with wonderful package deals with expeida.
we stayed at a 5* hotel and had a good flight price. check them out.
but, the winter is more of the busy season for HI, so the prices will fluxuate a lot. do TONS of research before you book and tehre will be no surprises with hotels or antyhing.

i would not book a rental car through expedia though. there are tons of rental car places on all the islands that have very competitive prices!

I'll check out expedia tonight then when I get home. I'm typically seeing airfare right now about $500-$600 for each person.
Hotels are not that bad. I'm seeing about $1,000 for a week's stay at a decent hotel so far through this costco catalog.

Here's a hint I wish I was given. If you intend to rent a car do it before you leave. I found myself in Maui unable to rent a car because none were available. That was in February.

We went to Hawaii (Kauai and Maui) for our honeymoon last month but booked it back in July. At first we went to Liberty Travel and they wanted $5k which included car/hotels (3-4 stars)/airfare (AA for $700 each)/inter-island flight for 12 nights (no food or excursions included). We said we'd get back to them.

I came home and did searches and found nothing that could really top the prices Liberty provided, except when I decided to give Priceline a shot. I'm not talking package deals... I'm talking getting things individually. Now the flight was booked through AA.com - couldn't get that for cheaper than $740pp from NY, but through Priceline, I was able to get resorts (5 stars) for $130/night in Kauai and $160/night in Maui. Contrast this to what Liberty wanted - $330/night. Convertible was had for $30/day which was a $15/day difference from expedia or travelocity. It all adds up.

Point is... priceline rules. I saved over $1k by doing things separately through them.

Another thing to consider is... if you get a package deal, you will likely be eating at the hotel, etc. Who wants to do that in Hawaii ? Sample the local culture. They had good local food and since you'll be driving everywhere, it's part of the experience anyway. As for excursions, there are other ways to save when you get there. You can do timeshare lectures (~1.5 hours) which, for example, drop helicopter rides from $220pp to $30pp. They also had deals on snorkel trips, luaus, and deep sea fishing (which I heard wasn't fun). We personally didn't sit through any timeshare pitches but it's still an option if saving is important to you. Things are still fresh in my mind so feel free to PM if you have any specific questions.

And yes you need to tell us which island(s). An inter-island flight runs you $90pp, no savings.

Doh, wish I had seen the advice on priceline - I always forget about them.

My gf and I are going to hawaii for 5 nights (next tuesday) and it came out to $900 per person. That was $500 airfare, $100 car, probably and then $300 for the hotel.

There were "package deals" that showed up on travelocity expedia etc for as low as $600. That sounded great. Then I went and read the reviews of the hotels. (thanks google) Most of them were god awful. The one I chose ended up being the best compromise between price and review, the next step up seemed to be closer to $450 per person for the hotel, which was pushing it.

Actually, come to think of it, I probably avoided priceline BECAUSE of the horrible hotel reviews. I guess I could have limited it to only "5 star" hotels, but the way it was going a hotel would look great in their own description, and then the review would say something like "nowhere near a beach, air conditioning didn't work well, rooms were 8x10, bathrooms were nasty" or maybe "lobby remodel amazing, maybe they should have remodled the 1962 rooms instead".

Will report back on how it goes if somebody reminds me. :)

Edit: PS this was in Oahu, since this was our first trip to HI seemed like we might as well start there. Airfare went up approx $150-180 per person to get to any of the other islands, as you pretty much HAD to go through oahu to get to any of them. But my impression was that the hotel situation wasn't quite as shady on the other islands.

Damnit, some day I'll learn to leave well enough alone.

This thread inspired me to go try priceline (I first verified that I could get out of my original hotel booking if I wanted to) and then I took the next step and looked on some forums which apparently specialize in helping you find the best deals on priceline...

So I end up searching for a "resort" room and I think I ended up with a target price at $122. I guess there's some great hilton resort that people tend to get for about $150 that everyone loves, and of course as with all things on the internet this seemed foolproof, I figured I'd take a shot at getting it and if I don't, no big loss.

Instead, they accept my bid for $122, and I get a room in the Sheraton, which has decidedly mixed reviews - and given those reviews, I think I actually prefer my original hotel. (which had mixed reviews but everyone seemed to agree that it was in a good location just a big away from the hustle and bustle)

Ah well, we'll see how it goes!

Costco...and do yourself a favor. Fly out of Los Angeles. You'll get a better price and it will probably save you some time in travel as it takes less time to drive from Los Angeles to San Diego that it does to change planes and fly.
