Going to Hawaii for the first time this weekend... UPDATED: Back, w/pics!

My fiance and I are going to Hawaii this weekend (depart today at noon, return next Wednesday at 6:30am), scheduled to arrive at HNL around 6:30pm.

We'll be staying with his brother, who lives by Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu... and would appreciate suggestions on what to do/where to go. We only have about 4.5 days there, so we hope to make the most of them.

I haven't been to a club for over two months, but I was curious as to how the Hawaiian clubs differ from LA ones. Does anyone have any suggestions on where/where not to go?

Also, are there any good restaurants we should check out?

Are there any activities that you'd recommend, or any sights you'd recommend seeing/checking out?

Thank you!

Update: Hawaii pictures :sun:

I just got back -- it was beautiful. I really enjoyed my hike to Manoa Falls and up Diamond Head; great views from atop Diamond Head. Pearl Harbor was cool, the beaches were great, and the humidity was *just* a tad more than LA 😉.

It'll be the first time for both of us (and probably the last, for a long long time). The only reason why we're going is because tickets were only $316/ea, a sale on NWA... we'll have to pinch pennies for awhile, but we hope it will be worth it.

Are the hikes guided or did you do them on your own? I'll remember to bring my digicam... where did you eat, and did you go out at night?

yeah, we're going in January after the holiday season.

Just be sure to get pics for the rest of us unlucky souls stuck in the misery of our mundane everyday lives.

go snorkeling at haunama bay ?sp? it's awesome, piece of cake to spend an entire day there. also, make sure to bring an underwater camera.

i love hawaii, good for you:thumbsup:

Thanks for the recommendation kaizersose! How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

you can usually rent a snorkel, some fins, a mesh bag, and some goggles for like $25 for the week. Well worth it if you ask me. I don't know any place in particular on that Island but you can usually spend as much (cruises, helicopter flights, off road tours) or as little (snorkling, hanging out on the beach, kayaking, hitting the local burger joints) as you want. I was on Kauai but the helicopter ride was awesome. We went to a stupid timeshare speech (took maybe 2 hours out of one day) but then got a TON of 2 for 1 deals on helicopter, Luau, kayak, etc. So if you are willing to waste some time on one day you can save a lot of money. Just go to a local shopping center and you'll probably find a person hanging out in a store there that represents a time share place.

I highly recommend the drive to the North Shore for Matsumoto Shave ice. It's incredible.

I'd recommend just driving around the entire island and stopping at the beaches along the way.

Also, the Dole Pinapple plantation gift shop has the most incredible pineapple icecream ever!!

You can also take a drive and see where the mansion where they filmed Magnum PI.

The Punchbowl National Cemetary and Pearl Harbor are pretty good as well.

If you're lucky, you might be able to find one of those ABC stores. (j/k they're everywhere!!!)

I can tell you that the last time I went, it was about $4/person to enter Hanauma Bay. You can rent snorkel gear for around $10/person. You can also buy fish food for pretty cheap. Great experience, but you should get there early in the morning (around 8am). It might be a little cold in the morning, but there aren't as many people around and there are more fish to see. If you wait till later in the day, then there will be a ton of people around and most of the fish will be hiding in the coral.

Also, other things to check out: If you like hiking, then Diamond Head (unguided) and also Sacred Falls is a nice hike (not the best waterfall at the end, but a nice hike nontheless). You can find that on the map close to the Polynesian Cultural Center. If you get to go to the North Shore, go to Matsumoto's Ice Cream. Yummy. Waikiki Beach is cool, but i you want some privacy, you can try to get to Waimanalo Beach. Captain Bob's Tour (think that's what it was called) is fun. You get to go on a catamaran out to a sand bar about 1 mile from the eastern shore of Oahu and snorkel, drink, eat, and play some volleyball. It's an all day affair, so think about it if you have the time.

Have a lot fun!

As far as clubs go, the two most popular places with the locals right now are Oceans and Pipeline. They aren't in Waikiki but they ALWAYS seem to be busy. One club that I always hear about that's in Waikiki is The Wave. Haven't been there myself but I hear a lot of commercials advertising the place. Seems to always have something going on. Not sure how any of them compare to clubs in LA as I've never been to one...

For places to eat, it depends on what you want. If you head out to the north shore, there's a place in Haleiwa called Kua'aina. They sell the best burgers on the island. There's also a Kua'aina close Ala Moana shopping center in the Ward Villiage Shops but it's just not the same. If you're into fine dining with a view, on the top of the Sheraton there's a place called The Hanohano Room. They have a 180 degree view of waikiki and the south shore of Oahu. It's expensive but you might enjoy it. Other nice places I can think of... Sam Choy's, Roy's, John Dominis. There are a lot...

For sights and activities, take your pick. Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Punchbowl Cemetary... all the touristy places. Take suring lessons, snorkeling, whatever... hard to give you recommendations as I don't know the kinds of things you're looking for. I would recommend spending a day in a car just driving around the island making stops at beaches and sights. You'll hit the lesser known more "Hawaii" places...

Have fun!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, shaved ice and pineapple ice cream... those will definitely be pit stops while we're there. 😀

Snorkeling seems pretty affordable, thanks for the tips on where to go and what to buy. 🙂

Do you know how much cover is at those clubs, shutterFly?

Sorry, not too sure. Usually they're free before a certain time, usually around 10:00 or 11:00 and then maybe $5-10 after. It's been a while...

I really enjoyed my hike to Manoa Falls and up Diamond Head; great views from atop Diamond Head.
btw, i stayed in hawaii for 7 weeks, just got back like 2 weeks ago.

manoa falls hike is horrible. there are much better hikes
diamond head is worth it.
you NEED to go to waimai bay, mokopuhu, moth of nost shore, etc.
The 'highest class' club in honolulu is zanzabar. Most hawaiins don't go to clubs though. they bbq and kick it at the beach. therefore, you won't find a really huge clubscene. DO NOT spend more than 2 hours at waikiki beach.

go snorkeling at haunama bay
haunama bay sucks, too close to waikiki and the water isn't that clear. go to waimai bay or sharks cove on the north shore for snorkling.

you can usually rent a snorkel, some fins, a mesh bag, and some goggles for like $25 for the week
you can buy it for that price, i think its 'bobs snorkle company' off of kapahula

go to that town that starts with an h... i think its hale.... well, i dunno the name right off hand but its in the north west part of the island. STOP BY AND GET A FCING SHAVE ICE WHERE YOU SEE THE CROWDS. and get it with the hommmade ice cream, its crucial, while your in that town, grab a bite at 'thai food'. In waikiki you will only find expensive sh1tty restaurants. Never order beef in hawaii, it just sucks. 'Plate lunch' is hawaiin for 'really good meal'.

You can go skydiving on the north shore, if you look like a college student, ask for the u of h discount and it will be like 60% off. man i miss that place

go to the royal hawaiin shopping center in waikiki. here
go to the hello project information village.
buy me stuff. 😀

Pictures of Hawaii trip!

The pineapple ice cream from the Dole plantation was pretty good... unfortunately we didn't get to go snorkeling, so that will have to wait for next time. Beautiful island, albeit touristy on Waikiki... the North Shore was, by far, the most beautiful (first beach featured in the pics).

glad you had a good time

/refraining from linking to and saying that you look great in a red bikini strolling down the sidewalk! 😉

Why is it that the only pics with hits feature a bikini? I had better investigate...
