Everything really depends on what type of vacation you want. If you are big into city / night life type of stuff, you might want to reconsider Maui in general. You can trek down to Lahaina from Kaanapali, but even then everything shuts down pretty early (with the exception of the restaurants). Maui is generally a more laid back type of vacation. Good for kicking back, relaxing, doing some snorkeling, etc.

If you are looking for a more "city" type vacation, Honolulu would be my recommendation.

Or, you could always split the vacation between the two, and get the best of both worlds. The only downside is repacking and unpacking your stuff one extra time, and dealing with another airport experience.

On another note, if you guys had to pick, would you pick Maui over Honolulu and if so/not, how come?

Do NOT go to Honolulu. Unless of course you're into trans-gendered crack-whores... Personally I can't stand the place.

Maui > Big Island > Kauai > Detroit > Honolulu

ROFL! But yea, going to Honolulu is like going to a more tropical version of San Francisco. Badly overcrowded, tons of crime, hordes of Asians, both resident and tourist, (oh noes...teh ornamentals!) accompanied by high prices, badly overcrowded freeways, and a big city environment.

O'ahu has some great places once you get out of Honolulu, but if you go, IMO, a visit to the Arizona Memorial is a must. Outside the city are some beautiful places to visit, but still...more people live on O'ahu than all the other islands combined...

Maui is MUCH more relaxed, but is still relatively crowded, depending where you are and when. Kahului, the biggest city on Maui is still just a small town of about 20K, (not sure if that's metropolitan Kahului including the adjoining small town of Wailuku or not)

Still, rush hour tends to be a lot of stop and go, and when the airport rush is on, (seems like more planes land between about 2 and 6 in the afternoon than the entire rest of the day combined)

Maui is by far our favorite. Hawaii (the big island) is just too...rustic...for me. Too many raw baren lava flows marring the landscape, too much "vog" on the southern end of the island where the Kilauea volkcano is) but STILL some beautiful scenery and places to visit.

IMO, the native Hawaiians are some of the finest people in the world. USUALLY very polite and respectful--even to us ha'oles. (as long as you're polite and respectful to them)
