Going to Gigabit - What Should I Realistically Expect? (Now I Feel Stupid!)

I get between 50 and 80 Megabytes p/s through my gigabit router. I had to buy new cabling though as the old cables throughput was extremely bad.
 
50-80 megabytes? wow how much does that cost that is insane mad speed. we only get like 80 megabits for $150 a month down (With cap)

That was from computer to computer over my internal Lan, through my router, which supports gigabit networking
 
You'll be limited by your hard drive, most likely. Theoretical limit is 125MB/sec but sadly I dont have 2 raid arrays nor a SSD. I've seen about 70MB/sec laptop to raid array which is 560Mbit in windows 7.

As someone else noted - unless the tcp/ip stacks are optimized you wont get this. That is, untweaked winxp setup = 300Mbit max or so. Linux is probably even faster than win7, lol.
 
FWIW, iperf (on OS X) tells me I can transfer 1.08 Gigabytes in 10 seconds, or 931 Mbps. No hard drives involved though.

Real life I probably get about a third of that, due to hard drive limitations (laptop drives).
 
Gigabyte switches and routers are not to expensive you can surely swing one easily in your current field.

Do I need a Gigabyte gigabit switch, or can I get an Asus gigabit switch? I thought Gigabyte only sold megabit switches, so it's a mild shock to me that Gigabyte sells gigabit hardware.

Here a gig, there a gig, everywhere a Gigabyte gigabit gig gig gig!

Giga switch is a general term for a Switch that is capable to handle Gigabit traffic, it has nothing to do with the company that happen to be called Gigabyte.

The better designed switches are sold by vendors that do Network hardware as a specialty, and Not by motherboard vendors that just slap their logo on a mediocre OEM unit, basically caching on their name recognition.

In my network I'm shooting for around 100MB/s for a GOOD, HIGH benchmark. I can get something around that going PC to PC over Netgear switch, CAT5e STP, jumbo Frames and really fast disk.

You need to take the disk out of the equasion to get a real feeling for the speed.

I use NetIO as a tuning app, but I don't really trust the numbers, since it's a small set of packets that are extraolated to the overall speed. It does test various packet sizes which i like.
 
I picked up a 24-port Gigabit switch at the local Future Shop (owned by Best Buy) here, for $50 on clearout. These things are getting so damn cheap these days. I am very glad I didn't do this back 3 years ago. Something comparable was about $300-400.

In fact, if an 8-port consumer switch isn't around $35 or lower now, I won't even consider it. 😛

$19 for 8 port rosewill with free rosewill (realtek no drivers) pci-e nic - anything more and i won't pay for home use 😉 hell i use them for printers too now.
