Viper I feel i'm in the same boat as you. My vision is probably exactly like yours and I know it. I'm just BS-ing all (unoffical) eye checks to get out of wearing glasses. But now that you say they can save your vision even more...I don't know what to do.

I couldn't live with glasses though, i'm way to active to have to deal and worry about glasses (especially when i'm not used to it). And i'm afraid contacts would be a royal pain in the ass.

<edit> And viper what brought you around to going to the eye doctor?

i've been wearing the things since 4th grade... actually i stopped and now have contacts and i don't know why it took me so long to start wearing contacts. ah well. my left is corrected to 20/17 or something, but the right one has some astigmatism so it doesn't correct as well. in fact i really can't read my monitor out of just my right eye. whatever. my mom first noticed that i couldn't read the specials on the burger king billboard. eyes have been pretty much the same since 14 i think. wear the same glasses i got when i was 16. don't have the previous ones as they'd usually gotten broken somehow.

Yop, if the girls don't like your glasses, switch to contacts... I wear then for years and years now (soft ones, one month disposable) and don't have problems. Anyway, due to the fact, my eyes are quite bad, glasses don't look very good...
Contacts are just more comfortable, if your eyes like 'em...takes some time to get used to it...

BTW, what the hell is 20/17 and stuff? Don't you measure in Dioptrine or do I miss something here...?

Ok, lets start a contacts thread...

You have my sympathy, Viper.. been on glasses since Gr.1 (everyone in my family wears glasses), and been on contacts since Gr.9 (I just finished freshmen year college). Although I only wear contacts now if I'm doing sports.

It's not too bad once you get used to them. Choose the right frame and they'll make you look very sophisticated! ;)

I've been wearing them since first grade. I have an astigmatism and I'm near-sighted. They've become part of my look, I guess. People say I look funny when I don't wear them. My eyesight actually isn't that bad, 20/40 in my right, and 20/30 or 20/25 in my left, I can't remember. My perscription used to be alot worse. Doctor told me when I was 7 that I would get them off when I was 12, what a crock of sh;t. Here I am, 16 years later. They don't bother me and haven't for a long time, but I hated them so much when I first go them. Never bothered with contacts though, probably cuz I don't like the thought of putting things in my eyes.

late.

I've only experienced puff test at chains like lenscrafters. My opthamologist does a really weird test though that I have not seen done by the optometrists at the chain stores. He puts some kind of powder in my eyes. I think the powder is purple. Then has me sit down and shines some purple or red light(almost laser like) through my eyes with some kind of mirror assembly.

another weird one is when he wears this hat with lots of lights and looks through my eyes with a magnifying glass -- have not had this done for a while.

What is he doing with these weird tests?

Your vision is actually not that bad Viper. You can actually pass the eye test for driving in most states. You should see what bad vision is really like. Mine is like 10 times, probablly more worse. Definitely legally blind without glasses.

I doubt they could really do much by catching it early though. Eyes tend to get worse faster initially after you get glasses. Maybe wearing contacts might slow or stop the degredation though.

Er.. what does 20/100 mean?
My left and right are both around -5.50, with -2.25 astigmatism @ 180°. Not that any of it makes much sense to me....

Doctorweir: the 20/20 type numbers come from the snellen acuity tests that are given by eye doctors. Basically 20/20 means that at 20 feet away from the chart you can read the last line of letters. 20/200 means at 20 feet you see what a person with normal acuity(20/20) sees at 200 feet.

The diopter is a measurement of the refractive power of the corrective lenses. The snellen system does not really dictate lens power, it is of course correlated in that a person with 20/40 would need a lower diopter (abs value) than one with a 20/200 rating, but this snellen rating is highly dependent on the person's acuity to certain types of shapes and angles which is why snellen chose the letters he did.

Some rare people actually have hyperacuity. These people can see better than people with "perfect" vision. I think they label this as 20/15, but am not sure. I have heard that these people can see two pins separated by 1mm at a distance of several miles and can see two stars in the sky in some places where for other people the stars blend into one.

Heh... okay, that sorta made some sense :) Thanks... but then how come I always see power measured in like -5.50 with 0.25 increments, both by the doctor and by the lens/contact lens manufactures?

Whoaaaa.... damn, those people must have a hard time buying a monitor...

Hmm I'm pretty grateful for my excellent vision even after staring at a computer screen quite a bit for the past 6 or 7 years of my life. I guess it makes sense though, because hardly anyone in my family has glasses. First of all, my mom and dad don't. My grandparents on my mom's side didn't get glasses til they were about 65 or 70, and the grandparents on my dad's side are around 65 now and only wear glasses for reading. No aunts or uncles on my mom's side have them, and only 3 aunts on my dad's side...but I think my dad's mom smoked when they were young, so that explains it.

Wow... out of like 25+ relatives, basically none have glasses.

sorry for rambling...but i just came to this realization :Q

BTW, Viper...big mistake with not having a woman present. :D

I like my eye doctor, his wife is definatly a MILF and has good taste (she works in the office), so there's always someone there to help pick out frames.

I said screw glasses and got contacts at my last visit. I don't have to wear glasses to drive, but I really need them, so I can't wear sunglasses w/o getting prescription ones. I figured for the cost of sunglasses + regular glasses, contacts seemed affordable. It took me about 3 months to find the right type of contacts for me, but they're great now and I don't regret it. Doesnt' bother me putting them in at all. At first, it took me 20minuts or more to get them in/out. Now I can do it half asleep (as I do every morning).

Doing it half asleep has its drawbacks. Last week, I was so tired I thought I put my right one in when I didn't, so I had to run home on my lunch break and get it. Otherwise, I'm fairly sure I would ahve threw up due to the eyestrain headache.

Hah.. I'm no rare person but I have experienced that power before when I was wearing my contacts (AV2's) and wore my old glasses over them.. I could read anything from very far away by focusing my eyes.. it was the coolest thing.. but I started getting a headache after about 30 minutes so I took the glasses off.. still it was an interesting experience..

Supposedly, Kaz is one of those people with great eyesight:

A Biography:
He is 6' 3'' and ranged from 330 to 350 lbs. He has a 60" chest and 23'' biceps. He was born on December 30, 1953. He has superhuman strength and even superhuman eyesight: 20/13 in one eye and 20/11 in the other. He is still alive today. He is a powerlifter and strongman who thoroughly dominated the strength scene in the 1980s.

Life really isn't fair is it? :D

Once in high school we had to take an eyesight test, and we had to stand in long lines to wait our turn. I noticed that I could read what I needed to on the chart even though I was standing about 15 feet behind the line. I suppose that isn't extremely abnormal, and that was a long time ago. I have no idea how much my eyesight might have changed since then.

I HAD MY EYES CHECKED YESTERDAY TOO! If that is a coincidence, some how, my last appointment was EXACTLY one year ago. Let this be an omen, June 27th is the predesined day to have your eyes checked.

Get contacts viper. They are a pain in the ass at times, but I had a much easier time adjusting to them then I did with glasses. I hate wearing those things on my face, they always slip down and annoy the hell out of me.

Are there contact lenses that you can put in and leave in (including sleeping!) for like a week or more? I want contacts but can't bring myself to touch my eyes to put them in. I think I could do it once a week though. :)

Maybe hard lenses, but I don't even know if you can get them anymore unless you have a special condition. They are supposed to be very painful at first, until your eyelids get used to it.

Its not that much of a pain to put your contacts in, in the morning, just make sure you wash your hands and rinse off the lens so there is no dirt, or else it'll hurt.
