<< Get Lasik, dude. >>

Can't that go horribly wrong, and leave side effects when you're old? If not I'd love to do it even though Lasers near my eyes sounds like a bad idea.

<< Heh... okay, that sorta made some sense :) Thanks... but then how come I always see power measured in like -5.50 with 0.25 increments, both by the doctor and by the lens/contact lens manufactures?
>>

Sorry, I guess I did not explain clearly what diopters were in my last post.
The numbers you get on the prescription such as -6.25 are in units of diopters. Basically this tells the manufacturer how strong to make the glasses. I believe the diopters are the inverse of the focal length of the lense. Basically negative numbers are to correct near sightedness and positive numbers are to correct far sightedness.

The Snellen acuity numbers used by some people to describe their vision because it is easier for some to comprehend a rating of 20/200 as being that that person can see at 20 feet what a "normal" person sees at 200 feet. These 20/20 type numbers though do not give the prescription because they do not describe the strength of the lens you need, but instead describe how well you can read a specific chart of letters.

Speaking of lasik...

The long term effects are not known (yet). Hopefully we'll know more in a few years about it.

Anyone see that primetime special on it last night? If your eyes aren't right for it, it can go seriously wrong...you'll have a hard time driving at night and with glare. People with oversized pupils and thin corneas should NEVER have lasik.

Anyway, on the primetime thing, they had a woman who was a bad candidate for lasik, and she was told so by a renouned NYC doctor. She went to several lasik clinics, and they told her she shouldn't have it. Then she went to a "bargain basement" lasik place...where the guy does 200 people A DAY (compare to 200/week). She had her eyes examined, they told her she was an excellent candidate for it. Of course, she backed out at the very last minute, and they confronted the doctor with the hidden camera tape.

Bottom line, if you plan on having this done, get a second and third opinion from a doctor who will not be doing the procedure on you. This is especially important if you plan on going to a bargain basement guy. (the one they talked to was $399/eye). Ask if your pupils are too big, and ask about your cornea thickness. The people they had who had it done when they were bad candidates said they'd do anything to go back and be wearing contacts again.

Apparently that doctor in NYC who told the woman she should have Lasik also repairs damage done by it, but they didn't say anything about it in detail. There's also a website dealing with the procedure, but I forget the name. I'll check ABC's site and see if I can link to it.

I can't believe you all are complaining about 20/60 vision. I have 20/400 in both eyes, *and* an astigmatism. Thanks, drive through!
