Going to get Broadband again....what should I do to save $$.

I live in Chattanooga, TN so I only have a couple of options that I'm aware of here. I used to have Bellsouth DSL. They combined phone service with DSL and kept letting my rates creep up with the introduction of new taxes and adjusted rates. I began paying around $85 a month for phone and DSL....it crept up to $95 in 3 years.

I've thought about getting a cable modem through comcast. Should I buy a cheap cable modem from somewhere and try that for a change? Would it be a cheaper option? Any advice would be appreciated.

By the way...I no longer have my DSL modem. I ended up giving it to my ex-roommate in trade for an entertainment center and a DVD rack... (not a bad deal cause together they cost about $200)

I can't think of a whole lot of ways to save money, but you could try signing up through a third party like staples or dell. I signed up through dell and they sent me a rebate check for $75. I pay the same discount rate that was available from the SBC DSL website, but I got an extra $75 from dell. Just check the offer to make sure you only have to sign up, not buy a system or other stuff.

Also when you call to cancel, their retention department can give you better rates if you tell them you're switching to their competitor.

The only time that I know of where you can save money is when you sign up or when your contract ends and you're able to switch. Outside of that, I don't think there's a way to save money on your broadband bill.

What I would do:

1) Buy cable modem with rebate so you get it free or cheap (these deals come up often) -- otherwise see what eBay has. Important thing to look for is DOCSIS and you probably want v2.0 but ask the ISP.
2) Get broadband through cable company.
3) Sign up for VOIP through a company like Vonage (but there are cheaper options so explore this) and do away with your landline. Some support 911 so if you have kids or elderly in the house, you may want to ensure whomever you sign up with offers this service.

I've done some serious thinking about the VOIP option. I'm probably going to go that route as long as everything works out well with my broadband hookup. I'll probably call today and place an order for the cable and then do the broadband order seperately. I think it will entitle me to further discounts since I'll be an "existing cable customer". Thanks-
