There are so many freaking cats out there it's mind-boggling. You could euthanize 1,000 of them per day and not make a dent in the population just in our county.

When my g/f and I went to Kentucky to visit her grandparents (on a farm in the hills in the eastern part of the state, out in BFE), we found that they had a rather brutal method for dealing with stray cats.. they'd put them in fertilizer bags and hang them from a tree, and leave them...

When you bring the little one home, be reminded that he/she will be frightened and will probably cry a lot in the first few days. Be understanding, and give it a tee-shirt with your smell on it to sleep with (or a clock that ticks, that can soothe as well).
