Going to Core 2 Duo, time for an upgrade

my current setup is as follows:

Opteron 165
DFI LanParty Ultra-D
1x1GB Mushkin DDR500
X1900XT
WD 160 (IDE)

So my plans are to get a new mobo, cpu, ram, and hdd. I was thinking something along the lines of

good, stable mobo
C2D e6320/e6420
2x2GB ram
Seagate 7200.10 320GB

For the mobo, I just want something stable with decent overclocking. SLI is not needed. For the ram I'm thinking some good stable 2x2GB of DDR800, with some overclockability.

Price is a factor, cheaper (but still solid) is better. Suggestions?

I read something earlier that Intel will have price cuts in July on their C2Ds and also introduce a few new models. If price is an issue and you can hold on for another 2 months, it would probably be worth it...

That's probably something I'll do. Good suggestion.

My biggest question marks are mobo and ram.

Get an E6420 instead of an E6400. The Gigabyte DS3 is cheaper than the Asus and is a great overclocker. RAM, if you just get any valueram DDR2-800 (or if better RAM is on offer, get that) you'll be fine up to 3.2GHz; the multiplier on the E6400/E6420 is x8 so you'll not even need any headroom on the RAM to get to 3.2GHz.

Is the only difference between the e6400 and e6420 the 2v4mb l2 cache? They're nearly the same price on newegg so that will work out fine.

I think the price cuts have already gone into effect. You can now get a Core 2 Duo for less than $115.

I'm not so sure about that ASUS board. I mean, it should be fine, but I think you can do better. The Gigabyte series of boards is fantastic. The standouts are:

GA-945P-S3: Incredible overclocking for a low price; limited bells & whistles.
GA-965P-S3: Also incredible overclocking; a few more features than the 945P. This is the one I chose.
GA-965P-DS3 (rev 3.x, not 1.x!): Again with the incredible overclocking; fully-featured. A little pricey compared to the other two.

For RAM, Anandtech has recommended the Wintec AMPO series, and on Newegg it has gotten similarly rave reviews. Since it's extremely inexpensive, I'd go for it.

^ You have nearly the exact same setup as I do!

Yeah, the only difference is the double cache.

4x1gb is cheaper 2x2gb gives you more room for future addons. It depends on overclocking (neither will do as well as 1x2gb, but a good set of overclocking 2x2gb is still very expensive).

Here's a link to a 2GB stick of RAM for $100. For me it came out to $206 shipped for 2 of them. That's by far the best price I've seen on 2x2GB.

Wow, that's a really good deal. thanks

I don't get it. Do you or do you not plan on overclocking the new system?

haha, I edited my post and forgot to change that part...for clarification, I plan on doing a little overclocking, but nothing extreme.

I'd wait until penryn comes out, and swoop in to take the current stuff at a great value. Asus or gigabyte seem to have the best c2d boards, and from the recent ddr2 v ddr3 review I'd get a p35. Any ideas as to the case? Airflow is important, esp if your overclocking.... Personally, I'd get a stick of 2gig ram thats really good. Thats the sweet spot now, and 9 months from now if you decide you want more, whatever type you choose will be cheaper because of the inundation of DDR3.
Where you planning on sticking with the 1900 gpu?
I would also keep the ide hdd in there for the swap, and longterm storage.
Which OS were you looking at?

I'm keeping my old case, psu, dvd burner, and 1900xt. I'm also keeping the ide hdd, but I need more storage.

Hell yeah, wonder what they'll be down to by January when its time to build! I'm gonna pick up at least 2! (Unless AMD puts out something mighty)
