Going to China!

So like the title says, I'm going to China for a month! I probably should of planned better, but I leave the day after my summer classes are over, took a month off from work (half of it is accumulated salaried pto and half is unpaid), will be back a day before school starts and 2 days before going to work.

I'll be staying with my aunt and grandma for the most part, but will definitely want to see other parts of China or there abouts. I picked the multiple entry visa, so to feel like I got my money's worth, need to go to 3 places at least. HK sounds like an easy one, my mom says my uncle works in a place called Oh-moon (that's in Cantonese speak, know what she is talking about?), and just need a 3rd place. Was thinking of perhaps hopping over to Japan for a week, but the tickets alone are going to run $800 RT :Q.

So any ideas for a 3rd place would be cool.

Then I've got questions about bring my electronic gadgets, the laptop, digital camcorder, digital camera, and maybe cellphone. I still don't understand what I need to bring or buy to use my stuff in China, I think I need an adapter, other places suggest I need an expensive transformer. How is the internet in China? Can I easily get a wifi connection? Or even if I have to pay, is it something I can easily get? If not, how are the internet cafes? Like can I plug my camera into them and burn stuff to CD or is that not allowed?

And here is an obligatory pic of me with an eel I caught 2 days ago.

Singapore as a 3rd stop?

<- or Taiwan 😛

I think most laptop adapters are ranged from 110-220V, so unless where you're staying only has 2-prong outlets, you should be fine on that front. I'm not too sure about others. I remember being able to charge the battery on my Canon S230 while I was in that area 3 years ago.

Singapore? Is that where they don't allow chewing gum?

Also, I need a couple extra batteries for the camcorder and camera, would it be better to buy them now off of say ebay and lug them with me on the flight or can I easily buy them in China?

You just got to be sneaky. I brought some from the USA to Singapore most of the time, but in small quantities.

:Q Does that mean they don't allow extra batteries? Both the camera and camcorder take proprietary batteries...

Many places have normal outlets, but many places have the two circle prongs too, anything with an external power supply will be ranged 110-220 but you can double check on it.

oh my god nice im leaving on the 12th to guangzhou try to head over to taiwan as 3rd place. looks like you'll be leaving two days before i leave 😛

CHINA AT MEET ANYONE? 😀

an adapter only makes the physical connection possible. China is 220V and U.S. is 110 so unless your device accepts both, and many laptops do, you need a transformer to change the voltage. plugging a 110V device into 220V can kill it so read the instructions for your stuff carefully.

Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is a really cool place to visit. I think the plane ticket from Shanghai was only like 400 bucks or less. I'm not sure what cities you are going to visit in China but definitely go to Shanghai if that's not already planned!

some tips for china:

1) you need a 220v -> 120v transformer for your adapters.
2) don't show off your gadgets to anyone unfamiliar and on the street. thieves snatch your valuables and they end up on the black market in a few hours (i was approached with an offer to buy some sort of digital camera)
3) apply #2 to ANY valuable.
4) wear your backpack forwards on busy streets. thieves use a box cutter and steal whatever you have inside.
5) most internet are based on bandwidth usage... so don't bet on any public easily assessable WiFi. your safest bet would be a large hotel.
6) food is delicious and cheap but i'd refrain from eating off street vendors... esp during summer time
7) weather will be HOT and HUMID. most likely you'll want to stay indoors most of the time.
8) don't act tourist-y (camera around your neck etc) or everyone will try to rip you off: taxi drivers esp.
9) buy insect repellent for outdoors.

good luck and have fun.

oo-moon is macau... it's one of the biggest gambling destination around asia.
