Going to China in May, specifically Shanghai and Beijing

My wife and I are going for 2 weeks, a week in each city. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on specific things we should see while in these two cities. I know the usual things like The Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square. I know the wife has a few more things listed. Just wondering if any one has been there and has any good suggestions of places or things to see? Thanks all!!!!

The Forbidden city sucks, and Tiananmen square is right outside it. I suggest you skip the crappy, dirty, people infested cities and go out into the countryside. Much better.

Go to Xian where they have the Terra Cotta warriors. But watch out for the water there, since its countryside, just drink bottled foreign water. Other places in the countryside like Chengdu , if you ever see Chinese paintings, its where they get most of their inspiration from.

Or better yet, skip China and stay home.

Mind if I ask how much you're paying for the plane tickets? Think of going this year but towards the end of summer.

stay away from the country side if you're not in a group, my friend got robbed, and he's chinese too.

If you dont want to wade through my blog, I'll can give you some suggestions here. First spend more time in Beijing than Shanghai. There's more to see and more to do in Beijing. One day is enough to see the Forbidden City/Tianamen Sq. Its worth making the trip to see the Temple of Heaven too. Yonghe Lamasery is good for another half day, the Summer Palace will take at least a whole day by itself. See the Great Wall, try to go to the Jinshaling/Simatai sections of the Great Wall, avoid Badaling and Mutianyu unless you have no other choice. Those are the musts, there are a lot of smaller landmarks around that you can fill in with too.

Shanghai, spend a day or two on the Bund. Two towns nearby make for interesting day trips too, Suzhou and Hanzhou. See Yuyuan Gardens and the area nearby. I'd say that makes up the highlights of Shanghai.

Oh, and when you're in Beijing, dont forget to try Peking Duck. It's cheaper there than anywhere else in the world, and it's delicious!

i have a habit of saving money, it took me about two years to save up funds. i intended on using it towards a car or something, but one morning, i woke up and decided i wanted to do this. i bought plane tickets and handed in my resignation letter two weeks later, and in two months, i was out of the country. that pretty much sums it up 🙂

Thanks so much for the tips everyone! I will be taking a ton of pics, just upgraded to a Canon 20D a few months ago. Can't wait!! I'll post some pics while I'm there for anyone interested.
