so my trip to grand canyon has been changed to chicago. Any reccomendations on where to go? this will be about a 1 week trip.

we will be driving there, and frankly, my main concern are places to avoid?

suggestions guys?

ok gys, so I'm going this friday to chicago.

now, It's my first time there and I'll be visiting places like sears towers, navy pier, places like that.

First question. Is parking pretty hard? do I need to bring coins and park in the meters? or is it better to take a bus around?

and about the dangers of chicago? my first trip to miami downtown was really scary. a lot of people told us to not stay out after 6 pm. Is chicago the same way? are there places to avoid or to keep in mind?

thanks

I took a few friends 3 weeks ago and we were able to walk or take the el'/L to wherever we needed to go...good luck finding spots on the street. The city felt pretty safe to me, and I was out alone at 2-4AM a few nights. There are definitely more unsafe places, but I guess I wasn't there...the bar scene at night is quite amazing compared to Detroit (big surprise) in places like Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Wrigleyville and obviously the big places downtown.

I wouldn't bother with Navy Pier as it's a waste of a walk...I'd spend more time in the museums if you're that kind of person. The MCA has a good Warhol exhibit right now (I'll be back for the MASSIVE CHANGE exhibit in Sept!).

All in all, we just decided on what to do as a group, so individual aspirations fall by the wayside.

If you take coin, take rolls because it will cost you at least $20 to park downtown 🙂 If you go to the Pier I thought the architectual boat tour was pretty good.

Places to avoid? That would be any highway, road, alley, street, etc. Unless you are walking of course.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the construction that had just started on 94 when we left...Don Ryan or something, was it?

Head to the north side and hang out in Wrigleyville during a Cubs game, or just walk around Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and Wrigleyville.

They are ripping the fvck out of the Dan Ryan (I-90/94) for the next two years. Avoid this if possible.

As for suggestions...

Here's a few suggestions:

Millenium Park (There are oftentimes concerts in the park)
Lincoln Park Zoo (I think they have some animals left )
The lakefront has miles and miles of paths
Museum of Science and Industry
Natural History Museum
John G Shedd Aquarium
Shopping on Michigan Ave (Water tower, 900 N Michigan, etc)

THere are plenty of eating establishments aroung Michigan Ave.
Gibson's for steaks
RL on Chicago and Michigan is supposed to be a lot of fun (haven't tried it yet)
Cheesecake factory (on the bottom of the Hancock) personally, I could skip it, food isn't bad but oftetimes a 1.5+ hour wait
Ghiardelli's and/or Hershey store for ice cream and chocolate by Water Tower
Spa/afternoon tea at the Penninsula (the Spa is wonderful!)
American Girl store to shop/luch if you have a little girl

Well, that's a few real quick...

I'll add a few:

Navy Pier
River boat tour
John Hancock or Sears Tower observation decks
Alder Planetarium (next to Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium)
Art Institute of Chicago
Walk around the Loop
A crapload of bars and clubs in the Rush/Division street area

I'll be in Chicago this friday, too. Of course, I'm there every weekday though. 😀

I find public transportation to be quite useful. The busses are useful, and the L ("subway") is fairly decent, too. If you need to move great distances, the Metra train will take you to other areas (like the northern suburbs).

First off, ignore the bums. Don't say "no" or "sorry" or give them anything. Just straight up IGNORE them. You will find this helpful.

You could check out the museums if you'd like, landmarks, etc. though you may find it quite entertaining to just walk around the city. You may also want to try to schedule a showing at the Lyric Opera House. Some serious history there, and not something you'd get a chance to see often. Not cheap, though.

Have fun!

edit: if you're of age, you really might want to check out Rock Bottom Cafe. Its a microbrewery and they have some awesome stuff, esp. the nacho appetizers. 🙂

Also see the Bahai Temple and museum.

Also, one if the best ways to see downtown is to hop on a bus. That way you can gawk in comfort.

Some Cool stuff: Field Museum, Shedd, millenium park, navy pier, michigan ave, linkin park zoo, museum of science & industry, alder, the art institue,
Some Good Food:: Lou Malnati's pizza, Portillos, harry carry's if you want to sit down and have some coin.
Get drunk in:: Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, and Wicker Park among others. Rush and Division = drunkin' party land.
Parking: : Don't. Ride the train. Parking will cost you >$20 a day. Train is $9 for 3 days IIRC, and goes everywhere.
