Your list looks good. Add Kill Em All, and you're good to go.

Kill 'em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
They never released another album after MoP as far as I'm concerned.

Add And Justice For All to the list and I totally agree.

Bah, these losers can all get fvcked - I liked every 'tallica album other than St. Anger (and even then, I dig a few tracks on StA)...
I'd say start off with Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice for All, Master of Puppets, the self-titled/Black album, and Load. Garage Inc. is kickass also, and easily accessible.
Personally I love Load and Re-Load just as much as their older stuff, but they are SO different, you really have to be in the mood for one or the other.
Kill 'em All is a pretty rough version of Metallica - you might hate it - like most people that got into Metallica after 1984, I'd wait and make Kill 'em All your last purchase.

It's only considered "sell out" by a bunch of useless, crybaby, pretentious cocks.
I listen to the music and enjoy it.
OP, listen to ALL of it and decide what you like.
