my wife and i will be buying our first house this summer. i'm looking for any and all pointers and advice from experienced people. going to look at Castro Valley in the bay area, CA and probably around 700-750k. that should get a 3 bed, 1.5 bath maybe 2 and 2 car garage. packing and moving all our sh!t will be a pain tho...i always hate packing.

we don't plan on moving. houses are expensive here and thats just have to be part of the deal. are house prices drastically higher in summer time?

open a charge at home depot or lowes... You always find stuff you need to get for the house! Other than that, do not settle for something you just "kinda like".

Real estate inventory should be picking up so you might want to start looking now. Also look at today's Wall Street Journal, Personal Journal section, article titled, "Finding a house gets easier."

I had a couple of things on my list of what to look for:

1) Walk in pantry
2) Dishwasher on the left side of the sink (right handed, scrub with right, pass to racks with left - just a pet peeve)
3) Must have copper pipes.
4) Master must have a non-shared bathroom.
5) Master is seperated from other rooms
6) A basement is always nice to have
7) Avoid two garage doors if you plan to own a truck or suv

*7 I don't see why. If one is a 2 car door and 1 is single car door, than it won't be a problem.

Here, it is two of the same sized.

You mean 2 one car doors. Those are terrible. So narrow.

Yep. Most of the other homes in our neighborhood have the double sized door. But we got my list (except the garage) and on a lake and a unique floor plan for $25k under market.
