my old man FINALLY wants me to build him a computer since he realizes how much HP sucks (very slow, since he does a lot of stocks online)
he just watches some real time broadcasts online and surfs, that's it, nothing intensive in terms of graphics, gaming or programming.

what would you recommend from AMDs line up 32bit? or go for 64? i mean recently i myself said to someone here get a 32bit platform, but now everyone is saying 64. ill more likely than not put him on windows-xp, because i think that's really all he'll need right now, and the prices for amd's opteron sempron (64bit enabled not exactly sure how that works) line ups are fractionally cheaper (which will be fine for the next 2-3years for him).
we're talking $100 or less...bahhh help
and id like suggestions in terms of ati vid cards and mobo's as well, thanks.
budget is $800-$1000

Honestly, if all he does is basically use the net, then a HP/Dell is going to be the most cost-effective option.

What are the specs of his current computer? Maybe you just need to optimise/maintain it a bit.

well it's an hp it's horrid, it's slow, been telling him to get one built.
i mean i have pretty much stripped as many start up applications and unnecessary applications (that would run in the background) as much i could.
so i do want to steer clear of upgrading RAM or w/e else...
how are all in one mobo's?

If stocks, and other web viewing, maybe the occasional video clip (like from cnn.com) is all he's doing, I hate to say it but get a Dell. You really can't beat Dell's prices when you add up the parts for the whole system. The one area I've consistently been annoyed with by Dell are the absolutely craptastic optical drives they use in their desktop systems. You're better off installing an after market DVD burner.

With a budget of $800-1000, I'd consider something along the lines of the Dell Inspiron 600m notebook from the small business store. Should run him about $900'ish shipped with an upgrade to 512MB of RAM. Get him a wireless router and he can carry it around the house. Computing power doesn't seem to be his main concern and he might like the portability.

good idea, but i think he wants a good solid desktop.

Crescent looks good...although im in toronto canada, i'm gonna have to hunt down that processor here, won't be ordering from new egg.

***update***
well the update is, i can build a computer all for myself, looks like my current comp is headed over to his room since it's fast enough and does the job, while ill get the newer one, ie - school, games, plus use a lot of photoshop and cs2 stuff.
so do i go sata/ide? and is it really worth goin sata in terms of long term upgrading, pricing and the speed, is it that noticeable?
so where do i go from here? thanks guys.
btw 2 products id like to stick to are amd & ati(a true video card, not one with their chipset, unless you can really convince me😛😛😛😛😛😛😛

just do this

amd 64 3200
1g of crosair value
120g seagate hdd
msi/epox nf4
ati pcie x800 / geforce 6600 vanilla

all for less than 1000$...

gaming pc for me would probably be

amd 64 x2 3800
2g ocz performance ram
250g seagate hdd
geforce 7800gt
dfi nf4 ultra sli (add new gfx in another year)
antec sonata ii
antec truepower 550w
