Going to be installing windows2000. have some questions.

i'm sick of windows98 and all it's crashes. i'm getting the win2000 cd in a few hours and i have a couple questions before i format my harddrive. after i format, is the installation of win2000 the same procedure as win98se? can i use the win98se startup disk to install it? and is there anything else that i need to know before i do this?

if you're not gonna be dual booting, the install is just like 98....you don't even need a boot disk as long as you boot from the cd-rom (assuming your mobo supports this. if you DO need to use a boot disk, a 98 boot disk is fine, just go to the command prompt with cd-rom support, browse the win2k cd, and run setup.

windows will give you the option of formatting , etc... so you don't need to even format the old 98 install before beginning.

all i can say is make sure you can get win2k drivers for all your hardware (you don't wanna be stuck with a new OS that doesn't support your video card, for instance) (and make sure the win2k drivers for your modem / NIC are on a floppy (unless windows finds them automatically) so that you can actually get internet access to download the win2k drivers you need)
 
If you boot from your win98 bootdisk, go to the I386 folder on the cd and type "winnt" for the DOS setup. If you use smartdrive it will speed things up.
 
you can use a Windows 98 boot disk..but like someone said above, you can also boot from your cdrom drive too. if you do use a windows 98 boot disk, just partition and format your HD with it. but dont system (sys.com) your HD otherwise you'll end up with 2 options on your NT Loader Menu. 🙂

sorry i didnt see your question on smartdrive till *after* i just posted my earlier msg..

smartdrv.exe might have come with yoru windows 98..best thing to do is, copy smartdrv.exe to your floppy disk (assuming your using a 98 boot up disk)..partition and format your drive after you boot up. then before you load start up the 2000 installation file, type "smartdrv" from your DOS pr0mpt and it'll load smartdrive up. trust me, you will regret not loading up smartdrive haha it can take forever without it

one more question! i've read that win2000 doesn't support ata100? well i have a kt7a-raid mobo and ibm 75gxp hdd that are ata100...hm what will i have to do about that? will performance be slower?
 
Should not be much slower, the next service pack will fix your problem..... do out real soon.

how to i format the hdd to NTFS? or when i install win2k, does it do that automatically?
 
From what I understand, the decision between NTFS and FAT32 are ones of personal desire.

If you choose NTFS, it's like this: If you ever plan on having a dual boot system of Win9x and Win2000, then Win2000 will be able to see the partition of Win9x, hence, you will be able to see all files made under Win9x. But, if you are running in Win9x, you will not be able to see any files on the partition of Win2000.

I've saw some members on this board say they've noticed a speed increase in using NTFS, but others say it's negligable. If you are only going to have Win2000 on your system, and you don't think there's any chance of ever dual booting with Win9x, then use NTFS.
