Going to be in downtown Chicago

Background:
I am 18 years old and my mom is going to be an extra in the film, Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell. I have to go with her to because she would get completely lost without a navigator in the car, we have to drive 2 hours. However, it is a closed set so I have nothing to do for about 6-8 hours and she won't let me drive her car around downtown Chicago.

What I need:
I'm going to be in this general area, a block away from the James R. Thompson Center. I need something to occupy me for a few hours, it needs to be within walking distance.
What are some good stores, arcades, fun stuff to see or do?

Thanks

just walk up and down michigan ave....plenty of stores and stuff there.

You can also go up to the sears tower...or go to millenium park. i am sure there is quite some stuff going on there.

Take the bus (#146, I think) south to the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium.

Walk to Navy Pier (Imax and other stuff).

Go to the top of the Sears tower.

Walk along the lake.

Take the river boat tour.

Take a walking tour of lower Randolf.

Eat.

Heh...I'm posting five blocks from there.

Walk up Michigan Ave (all the neat stores are north of the river), check out Millenium park, take a walk along the lake, The Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum are also worth checking out.

The view from the top of the Sears tower is like one of those cartoons where all the building below look like they are bending up toward you. Cool.

Tip: If you choose to go to the top there is a special tourist elevator. You have to go to the basement, pay 5-10 bucks and watch the infomercial. Don't try to board the regular elevators as the Men in Black will greet you and turn your butt around.

Walk up/down Michigan Ave for a while, Navy Pier is good way to kill an hour or two. Hop the red line train south to Cermak (10 minute trip) and eat lunch/dinner in China Town. There's also a movie theater on the other side of the river (few blocks from where you'll be.) Enjoy downtown Chicago, it's beautiful in the summer time.
