Baltimore's not the greatest place on Earth, but it has A LOT more to offer than all these suburban wusses (whose exposure to B-more is probably a trip to Camden Yards and an episode of The Wire) know. :|
😉
And thanks to a slow day at work, here's a
MAP of the city with neighborhoods of interest labelled. note that there's much more than just the harbor.
Inner Harbor - The Aquarium, Hard Rock, ESPN Zone, etc. Nice views. But nearly everything is a chain store/restaurant. Doesn't give you a true feel of the city.
Federal Hill - Closest cool neighborhood to harbor. Tons of bars and restaurants. Near the stadiums for convenient pre-gaming. My favorite bars: Thirsty Dog and Ropewalk
Fells Point - Less yuppy, more "character" than Federal Hill. Tons of bars/restaurants as well. The Soundgarden is a great CD/record shop. My favorite bars: Wharf Rat, Max's on Broadway, One-Eyed Mikes, Waterfront.
Canton - My neighborhood. More residential as compared to Federal and Fells. The Square on O'Donnell street is where the bars are concentrated. I like the Square enough during the week (Nacho Mama's, JD's, Claddagh), but it gets a bit crowded/dancey for me on the weekends. I prefer the side-street bars, however: Mahaffey's, Pickled Parrot, Growlers
Mt. Vernon - The cultural (and gay) center of Baltimore. Home to the Walter's Art Gallery, Peabody, Meyerhoff, Lyric, etc. Washington Square is very nice. Also home to some great bars/restaurants: Mick O'Sheas, Brewer's Art (amazing beer, food, and atmosphere), The Belvedere
Little Italy - It's little and contains (shocker) tons of Italian restaurants. None standout greatly, but they're generally tasty and affordable. Vaccaro's (gelati and other desserts) is worth checking out.
Charles Village - The area near Johns Hopkins main campus, so it obviously has a college vibe. I like it because it's home to the Ottobar.
Northern Fells/Butcher's Hill and Locust Point - Probably only worth checking out if you've exhausted the other rest of the city. Some very cool places, but they're spread out and are somewhat hard to find.
