I'm headed to Alaska in a week for a 7-day cruise, 4 day inland trip (Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Anchorage, Denali) and I've found these cruise forums (cruisecritic.com and cruiseaddict.com) but I'm not sure their demographics really overlap with mine (guy in 20s). Wondered what the techie crowd here has done or would do again in an Alaska trip. Thanks!

Alaska this time of year is out-of-this-world gorgeous. Don't spend any more time than you have to indoors. Hike, climb any thing you see. DOn't go swimming, though, most rivers are glacer-fed, which means you die of hypothermia. So it goes. I need to go back there asap.

I read on DDRFreak that there's a place in Anchorage where they hold Dance Dance Revolution contests fairly regularly.

If you are able, hike flat top. I'm guessing on a cruise you won't have a car rental so maybe not the best idea, but the view you get of the entire Anchorage area is beautiful.

If you are downtown, which is most likely, take an evening walk on the coastal trail. Right now it is still light enough to be walking as late as 1130 or midnight.

Right now it's gorgeous, been 80's and sunny for over a week. Hopefully that holds :D.

Well other than that I can't think of much. What kind of food do you like? I could suggest a restaurant or two in town to go to.

Something good? I think we're just in Anchorage very briefly. More time in the other locales. But anything you have to say, I'll treat as gospel.

Go visit some of the old mines. My most vivid memory from my time there was from one of them. We were near the top of a "saddle" between two peaks, I turned around and looked down, and there was a sea of clouds, so well defined it looked like an ocean, and the grassy part of the "saddle" was like a beach. It was unbelievable. Other peaks poked through like islands. That is something I would like to see again before I die.

If it wasn't a cruise, id say king salmon fishin, brown bear huntin, mountain exploring in a 4x4.

Your ex is up here in Alaska?

She's working a restaurant in Moose Pass, south of Anchorage.

I used to stop there for ice cream all the time. Decent bowl of chili in winter also.

Dude, what line and stuff are you going on? I'm heading out on a Princes Cruise to those same stops but we don't leave until the 26th so we might be following a week behind you. heh.

If you get a chance, go out on a salmon charter. I think it's about the right time of year for silvers. It's a blast.
You likley won't get to see McKinley, it's ussually clouded in, but if you do it's spectacular.
