Going to a BMW Performance Driving Class today......[Back with PICS and VIDEO!]

iamme

Lifer
It's a complimentary class where, I assume, we get to scoot around in 3-series Bimmers for a few hours 🙂

I'm sure it'll be a glorified sales pitch, but hey, it's free!

I'll take my camera and take some pics 😀

UPDATE:

It was pretty fun 🙂 They set up the parking lot of the Pontiac Silverdome (where the Det. Pistons and Lions used to play) into 4 seperate tracks. They said the tracks were 18 second tracks, although the instructors did them in about 16.5 seconds 🙂. They had a little building where they gave us a short presentation on braking techniques and steering concepts.

Our cars were 330i's. I was a little dissappointed that the cars were autos, but I soon realized that had we driven manuals, it would have limited our time in the cars.

We then went out to the tracks to for some ABS braking demos. First, we floored our cars in a straight line and then broke when our instructors told us to, a the last possible second. I was determined to push the car as hard as I could and trust the ABS system. I was certain I would plow through the cones ahead of me, but when the instructor yelled "brake!", I slammed my foot on the brakes and stopped inches before the cones 🙂 After that, we did the same thing, but did it into a turn and tried to steer the cars through the turn.

After that the instructors took us around the track and explained how we would manuever through the course. They set up cones that signalled where we would hit the corners in the turns. We did a few practice laps and then we split up into two groups and ran a rally race. Just like a rally foot race, each person would run the course, one right after the other, and the time would be cumulative. Our team ended up winning 🙂

In the end, it was a damn cool experience. When do you get to push a Bimmer hard around a race track? It would have been more fun if we had more time on the track, but for a free class, who's complaining? 😀 The worst part was the drive home....it felt like I was driving SO slow 😛

Pics (all 1024x768, ~150-300K)
Here's a view of the track from the parking lot
Here's a shiny 5-series they had in the lobby
They had a little charity test drive setup. You test drive a BMW and they donate money for each mile you drive.
This was the little building they set up to house the registration and class
These were the charity test drive cars you could choose from
We were in the classroom anxiously waiting to begin 🙂
An instructor talking about some basics (and how great BMWs are 😛)
Going over some more basics
Out on the track, an instructor talks more about handling the course
First group ready to get going
Back from a braking exercise

Video (Right click, Save As)
Video taken with my Canon S400 digital camera, so audio/video quality isn't super.
5.5MB - Another group's rally race (lots of wind noise, sorry)
1.9MB - Straight line, ABS braking exercise
2.0MB - Taking a turn while slamming the brakes

DAMN YOU! A few friends and I were looking into taking a class like that for fun but it turns out it's way too rich for our student/car-enthusiast blood (it's probably meant to be that way).

By the way, if you don't take that course on a manual M3, I will make it a personal affair to find you and beat you down 😉

lol, i'll have to change my pants if they hand over the keys to M3's. 😀

since this is a free course, i think they'll probably have 4-cyl 3 series bimmers. i think there was a course that cost a pretty penny and let you drive M3's.

oh my bad, i thought 325's were 4cyl and 330's were 6cyl. guess not. 😛

Must be a different course than the one we looked at, they provided M3s for everyone. It was pretty expensive though at roughly $USD 1000 for a one day class we were probably not the target audience 😉.

You missed the FREE part. Nobody gets in an M3 for free! From what I understand you get two hours in a 330i (sedan) with an instructor.

Iamme - let us know how it goes.

Did a similar program for BMW a couple of years ago. We got to drive the X5s before the released in the states. That was fun!

i went to one! 😀 😀 the course was cool, too bad hands on part went by really really quick..
slamming on the breaks was fun, and was amazed at how fast the car comes to a stop.

almost made me want to fork over $495 for the half day 3 series course.. almost ^^
they also have a m5 course that will cost ya around 850 for a whole day. talk about spending money, just so you can infatuate yourself with a car that you prob won't be able to afford till much later in life, and make you hate your current ride.. *sigh*

edit: btw the car was an automatic 330i w/ a sport package. it sure was fun throwing around 38k, give or take a few, ride. amazing how the breaks just hold up after repeated hard and i mean hard breaking. there's the sales pitch!

An M5 course?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm so there. If they had these things in Dallas. I would <3 driving an m5. Or an M3. Be better if they had an old M8 there for you to drive... heh. Anyone ever seen one? I saw one in Dallas about 6 months ago...

When i bought my M3 last year they sent me to that M driving school and all we did for 3 days was drive M3's, 5's and coupes. It was so much fun!!! Just don't turn the DSC off!!! LOL Trust me on that!

I did one of these with Mercedes, their "C-Spot Driver's Party." They don't really teach you anything, basically they give you the keys to a car and let you do a lap through the cones in a parking lot. No one came along with you, so you could do what you wanted. 🙂 Although the people who didn't know what they were doing and pushed it too hard usually got a talking-to, but nobody got thrown out. I wasn't that impressed with the cars, but it was definitely a fun time anyway.
