Going straight from XP SP1 to SP3

The prereq's for SP3 are either SP1a or SP2. I have an XP SP1 disk and that's what I'm currently at. According to MS, the only difference b/n SP1 and SP1a is the MS VM and a couple of registry strings. I'd rather skip the SP2 install and go straight to SP3. I feel like uninstalling MS VM, manually editing the registry and updating to SP3. Should I? Should I not?

You know, really, the time it would take to make the changes, just run the SP2 installer. On a decently quick system it should only take 15-20 minutes, that's how long it took me to install SP2 on a XP virtual machine.
