will i notice a big boost at 1280x1024 from my current one 7800gt?

In cod 2 sometimes i get stutters when things get busy.

is it worthwhile for the outlay?

also if i get the same card do they need to be overclocked the same speeds etc...

thanks

Given your system specs, there is no better way to get framerate than add another 7800GT. You'll notice the difference at 12X10 in that you'll be able to run much higher AA and have higher minimum framerates. Also, FEAR and COD2 will run much better.

SLI 7800GT's you'd be looking more towards 1600x1200 to see big benefits. It does make 1280x1024 more fluid in CoD2 & FEAR and in almost everything else, bump up the resolution.

do both cards need to be clocked the same?

Got a 17" TFT here so thats the highest I can go

In Call of Duty 2, definitely. Probably FEAR as well, but not so much in other games.

Disagree. He can use SLI 8X and 16X AA in other games, which he wouldn't have the power to do without.

(although I agree having the the flexibility to choose between higher res and higher AA is optimal)

GT SLI is currently my favorite video card rig but... haven't you considered selling the GT and grabbing one G71 card soon instead? It's undoubtedly going to be faster than GT SLI (even GTX 512 was close), and quieter, too. Of course, you'd have to spend more money but your comp looks very nice so you don't look like a guy limited by cash shortage ;)

Samples should come next week, and it should be "widely available" in February. It's not official info but usually, such rumors or "leaks" prove well-founded and correct...

I can't Keep up!

I guess then that 7800 GT will drop in price,

Maybe I should pounce then.

Well, the GT already seems reasonably priced now. I don't know if its price drops dramatically, in fact I wouldn't count on it. The GTX may be more affected but if G71 is placed like GTX 512, i.e. in the enthusiast segment @ ca. 750 bucks, the GT/GTX prices might not change at all, or just decrease insignificantly.

You will notice it enough for that price yes. Your wallet will be lighter and your games faster & prettier.

would it be better for me to sell my current 7800 gt and get a 7800 512 gtx in its place?

yes, but it may come out to be more expensive. to do that, you should also consider a better monitor. a 7800gtx 512mb is pointless on a 17" screen

why?

couldnt i play at 12x10 with everytrhing maxed with NO slow down at all?

why would a single 7800 512 gtx be pointless with a 17" tft and 2x 7800 GTS would not?

Getting the GTX 512 would be the worst thing you could do, IMO. Either go for GT SLI or wait for G71. The GTX 512 is:

- not really available now,
- expensive,
- to be dethroned very soon by G71.

It's your call but going for GTX 512 would be for sure the last thing I would even consider.

Just wait for R580 to be unveiled on Jan 24th. G71 is going to come a bit later. Either way R580 is rumoured to be about 25% faster than GTX 512. And it probably won't cost $750 US.

you will most likely see benifits instantly even with noAA in games like quake4,cod2,and fear easily( the smoothness factor is instantly impressive),.......and its a real special feeling to enable 2 or 4xAA @ 1280x1024 and only see the visuals increase ...but it plays EXACTLY the same as without AA,..i call it a blessing ;)

Still undecided what to do...

I might get a ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 would this be better than two 7800 gts in sli?

Never. Get the GT SLI. If you game at 1280x1024 it is still worth it because you can game with all the AA and visual goodies set to maximum.

You WILL NOT be disappointed.

I have a tight budget-minded-bias so here goes:

Your computer seems to be fast enough to be able to play those games fairly fine at your 12x10 resolution, so I would say to sit on your current setup, and wait for G71 or ATi's next offering. The fact that you have an open pci-e slot on your mobo is what is tempting you to drop $300 dollars on another card where, in your situation, you would probably only see a nominal increase in visual benefits, as compared to what the next generation card can provide you.

On the other hand, you can sit on your hands forever in this game waiting for the next "thing". Take me for example, I just popped in another 512 ram to give me a gig, on an XP 2000, with a ti4200, and I am eternally waiting. :D

Drop the $300 now, skip the G71, wait for G80/R600, then sell the GTs for whatever you can get them for and get G80/R600. I think thats the smarter decision at the moment. Unified architecture... blah blah blah.

I have GT SLI and I am thoroughly impressed with it. I say go for it. If you want your games to look better now, then buy for now. I've never been one of those that will "wait on the next thing" because you can garuantee that A. the next thing will be expensive as hell and B. once the next thing comes out, the value of your current stuff will decrease even more.
