Going skiing tomorrow for the 1st time in 12yrs...

I supposed I'd look like an idiot if I wore my old skis and boots hey?

This is pre-hourglass skiis, long 205cm racing skis (top of the line 12yrs ago, and barely used sadly).

I'm pretty excited to go. Skiing is all I used to do, going 4-5 times a week through middle and highschool and the first few years of college. I just dropped out of it when most my friends stopped going and other things got in the way.

No, I am serious. I am a snowboarder, but I still find it pretty awesome when I see others with old school gear on. No joke!

You'd only look like an idiot if your old skis and boots are teal or some other strange color. There's no point to spending the money on a rental unless you really want to try out shaped skis.

Speaking of things getting in the way of skiing - you're going to love all the snowboarders!

Besides you are more familiar with them and you'll save rental fees.

I went Sunday and saw a classic setup on an asian guy. 80s snowsuit with old boots and rectangle skis up to the single pointed tip :laugh: Looked like he was having a grand ol time though, so you may check it out

everytime i ski i always see a couple old-timers in old-school gear bombing down the mountain. if youve got the skills, wear what youve got.

$40? Where are you renting, at the mountain? Around here it's much cheaper to rent at a local ski store, and you don't have to wait in a potentially long line that could cut into your skiing time.

No, if you rip with old skis (ala Glen plake), no one can talk shit on you. Besides, you look like a beater on rental equipment anyways, especially if you do stupid things like stop on cat tracks/traverses, ski like an idiot, etc...etc...

Inspect your boots for any small cracks or discolorations.

Years ago I went skiing after a 5 year break. I get to the top of the first chair ride and tighten my boots up. I dropped into the fall line and got going pretty good, and carved a fairly hard turn.
Next thing I know, I am sailing through the air and then plowing down the slope on my belly. :laugh:
I stand up and find myself in just the boot liners wrapped with some of the upper boot. I look back up and see this trail of little bits of plastic ending at my skis. The entire sole of the boots had deteriorated and just disintegrated when I applied force to it.

My old equipment is from the early/mid 90s. They are/were actually pro-form Elan racing skis. Employee only order type of stuff. Some same-era Salomon 987(?) binding etc. My boots... well those are super old, and bastardized with replacement buckles (many broken from amny many big bails and crashes) . Those I just simply couldn't wear anymore since they were on their last legs years ago, and I should have likely retired them then. Not to mention I can only imagine what the insoles are like at this stage. They were prety much rotten when I used them daily....

I thin tomorrow I'll just rent. It's with my kids school so I wont be bombing any hills or anything. Besides Im SURE my skis would need a serious tune up before they were usable. The edges have to be nice and caked.

Man I used to watch those Glen Plake videos all the time. Back when him and Scott Schmitt (REALLY nice guy btw, and INCREDIBLY short) were one-upping each other every damned month with new shit.

I figure I have 4 trips with my sons school... I really hope this gets me (and him?) back on the slope much more frequently. I may not be as young and nimble (and stupid and fearless) as I once was, but man I'd love to get back on the hills on a regular basis.

As for the snowboarders comment... yeah I know. They just started taking over as I got out of the sport. In fact I did it with them many times too as my friends started to head that direction too.

After not skiing for 12 years I don't think the gear will be crucial as long as it's decent. 12 years is not that long IMO for casual skiiers and what was good then is still probably good now. If I still had my K2 extremes and soloman quadrax bindings, I'd still happily use them today. If not, rent from a ski shop (not mountain).
