thanks mechBgon 🙂

Will use a 120gb ATA 133, 8mb cache Maxtor hd for storage

Windows XP Pro, I have read of problems. Is there anyway to fix without installing Win 2k or Win XP SP1 or are there no performance problems ?

Does the setup sound fine? I wanted a 15k Cheetah drive but the $359 pricetag is too much

It seems everytime I install SP1, XP decides to crap and I have reinstall. So far it seems that XP stays installed longer if I don't install SP1

I think there might be problems with SP1 if you're running an illegal XP. SP1 is supposed to shut it down or something like that.
Other than that, you may have to reinstall any VIA 4-in-1's if you run a VIA based board.

I havent had any troubles with it, but I only use XP at work. Its kind of slow every morning when I get in, but maybe some energy saving crap is turned on... Oh well.

Sorry, I dont have any SCSI experience on XP. I figure if I am going to spend the money on SCSI I should save money on software 😛

Definitely digging the SCSI disks I have though.

I wonder if i should join the SCSI club? I may but i have a lot of thinking to do. It would be so much easier if i could go to a store like Fry's, Bestbuy, compusa, etc and go to two computers with the extact same specs but one with a WD800JB or one of the other fastest IDE HDs today and the other one have a Seagate 15.3K SCSI HD. Then i could stay in the store for hours doing 100s to 1000s of different test on both of them. Then i could see in person if SCSI is really worth the money. I love being able to feel the difference in my view in person. It would be so much easier to make a choose too. I may love it so much i have to get SCSI or i may think uhhh its faster for sure and ok but its not exactly what i expected. Its just not a earth shattering difference i may say. Who knows. I will never know till i get a chance to test it out in person. 🙁

Bestbuy or compusa please start selling computer with Seagate 15.3K SCSI HDs in them just so i can go test one out in person to feel the difference from IDE lol. I am not holding my breath hehe.

You've been wondering this since at least October of 2001. How much more thinking do you plan on doing?

I am thinking about maybe going to SCSI in the future maybe but..

Can someone who lives in the same area as imtim83 with a SCSI system let this poor soul test drive it so he doesn't have to wonder any more? It's been really sad watching this saga drag on month after month.

Pariah well you see once i wasted my money and i never want to do that ever again. I guess ever sense that i have been careful to research for a long time anything i buy or ask questions about. Remember there is no stupid questions. The only stupid thing is to not ask a question at all.

I like to find out every little detail about one piece of hardware. Like every single good points and bad points to a single piece of hardware so i know exactly what i am buying before i get it.

Which is why you should always buy from places that don't have restocking fees. If you don't like the product send it back. No harm, no foul.

Pariah well its not always that easy. But a lot of the time i guess it is. So how many times have you returned things? I bet not much.

We should have him test out sharkeeper's SCSI system... 8-drive 15000rpm RAID0 oughta make his hair stand on end 😀

Sorry to bust your bubble but SCSI will NOT help you with the following:

3DMark Scores
Gaming performance
Windows Boot time (if you subtract windows polling delays and HBA firmware initialisation then yes it is faster)
CD Burning speed
System "feel" when sufficient ram is used and when doing light multitasking
Even bigger problems
"Getting some"

Ok, perhaps the last one is a bit personal, but seriously folks the individuals that can see a real difference between SCSI and IDE in everyday use are the people that really need it.

On my side of things, if I didn't use (SCSI) my life would be different. Second City Television comes to mind. :Q

Cheers!

I return broken items all the time. I rarely return working products, as it's very rare I buy something I didn't want in the first place. I do my research beforehand and I believe you get what you pay for. So, if I want a 9700Pro I buy a 9700Pro, not a 9500 and try to mod it, if I want a 3GHz CPU, I buy that, not a 2GHz with $60 in cooling and attempt to OC the crap out of it, if I want fast storage, I buy SCSI, not some hack job ATA RAID setup. I also don't spend weeks scouring pricewatch trying to find some fly by night joint that sells a $300 item for 75 cents less than the competition. I only buy from about 5 places that aren't always the cheapest but have very good reputations and easy returns procedures, to me that's worth spending a bit more for.

Pariah i am not trying to find the best price or deal. Just trying to make sure its worth the money or not in a new piece of hardware. I like to do a whole lot of research.
