i know some people have tethered without buying the tethering package through ATT. I dont plan on going crazy just checking my email and a few sites everyday. (no streaming video, torrenting, etc.)

Its not even 3G so its not like i can go nuts anyway. But those who have done it (anyone who has tetherd with an iphone) have u gotten caught?

And what would they do if they did catch you? up your rate?

I have tethered a couple of times on T-Mobile's (slow) EDGE network - just checking email mostly. No issues to report.

I would think you'd be ok as long as you didn't download a lot of data. I'd figure AT&T would have better things to do than look up the logs of a user who didn't pull a lot of data.

But that's all just my opinion and speculation.

yea i kind of figured the same thing. Im going to install bitmeter to monitor how much data i use every session. how many megabytes do u think is safe to keep it under?

I tethered close to 4GB when I was on vacation last month. Stay under 5GB, and I think you will be ok.

EDIT: I have an iPhone.

I tether quite a bit on my iphone as well. No problems as of yet. They dont know one bit of data from the other to my knowlege, so you should be fine.

PDANet - the trial version only, I've never bought it.

Before that I went through the somewhat elaborate game of setting up an srelay proxy on the phone and then an ad-hoc network and then connecting to the iPhone through that.
