going on trip.....what to do with hotels?

I"m going on a small road trip tommorow and will be staying there for 3-4 nights. We haven't really booked any hotels yet. Is it safer to just go to hotwire.com or something and book the hotel now, or will we be alright driving tommorow and stopping at what we see with no reservation?

Of course, I"m talking in terms of price and room availability. What are the chances of me going into somewhere and hearing them say that "all the rooms are full" when I get there tommorow w/out a reservation?

so what is cheapest besides hotwire.com?

Well availability is all relative. Trying to find a hotel room in the middle of nowhere in an off season would be easy but try it around Indy when the race is on.

I've looked around and have always went back to expedia.com. I booked a hotel with them once 12 hours before my trip and was told that they ran out of deluxe room when I get there, they then upgraded me to a room with a king size bed and more room to run around. Looks like the hotels are responsible to notify you if there's room or not.

Call the hotel that you're about to check in before you leave for the trip and make sure everything is underway.

When we road tripped across country in August we were able to find rooms with no real problems. It depends a lot on when and where.

Our biggest mistake was not looking harder in Boise Id. We were headed east. Believe it or not in the West if you pass up a town it can be hours of driving till the next one!

If you walk into a motel at night and ask for a room, you will probably pay more than you need to. You might be able to save money by calling them on your cell from the parking lot before walking in. They know that if you call you can easily price shop other places, but once you are in the door they know that not too many people are going to walk out and drive around some more looking for a better deal.

If you're a AAA member, get the TourBook for the area you are going to be in and you'll have all the prices and phone numbers you'll need.

are you talking HOTELS? or Roadside motels??

if you are talking just places to sleep on the way to your destination, i doubt you will have any problem with vacancies.
