I built a new rig - two identical ones actually. One worked right off the bat, the other one didnt. Build #2 sounded like a jet engine when I first turned it on, and the harddrive refused to format. I took it apart, put it back together. Still jet engine, still no format. So I RMA's the harddrive (I was having trouble with the plugs on it anyway) and I purchased a higher quality power supply. Both parts came today. I put them in, booted her up. Everything booted nicely, it was running nice and quiet as well. I booted from CD (same Windows CD I used on my other build) and it bean the format. Got to 90% or so and said it could not format the harddrive. What gives?

I would love some tips here. I refuse to believe that I got a second bad harddrive, but I don't know why else it wouldn't format. Thank you!

Which type of Windows are you installing? What are the parts you're using, specifically the mainboard and the hard drive? What optical drive?

You could always download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility and test your hard drive with that to eliminate it from the list of suspects.

The specs are:

Biostar TForce965PT
ntel Core 2 Duo e6600 2MHz
2048 MB of Patriot DDR2 667
EVGA 7600 GT GeForce
Western Digital 160.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS (sata)

I'm installing Windows XP Professional. I used the same disk to install on my other computer so I know the disk isn't messed up or something.

I'll try running the harddrive diag.

Kilcan,

check-it, remove WD HDD from Build #2 and place that puppy into Build #1 (of course after removing HDD from Build #1)

Being that both systems R identical, see if you can install the OS using Build #1. If all is well after install, transfer the HDD back to Build #2 and cross those chubby little fingers of yours..... LOL.... :~0

If above fails as did within Build #2 then u may have another BAD HDD.... (better believe it!)

good luck
