going hiking for my first time this Saturday

tennis shoes wont cut it if its a rough trail, more like some timberlands but for your first time it should be ok if the hike is easy. water is a good idea and if you have a cell phone take that too, a granola bar would be good too if you get hungry.

have fun!

water, spare clothing (dont really think you need it), some fruits and snacks, and lots and lots of condoms 😉

<< ok so what do I need to go hiking? it's probably 2-3 miles. All I think i need is water and tennis shoes. >>

Please don't be that guy. 🙂 Get some hiking boots. Your feet will thank you.

2-3 miles ought to be simple. You can get by with tennis shoes, hell i've done that in sandals before🙂 Definitely want water. Other than that, have fun. J/C where are you going?

you going camping or just going for a day hike?

2 miles is nothing, seriously, and i'm not even in shape. I've gone camping with my friends for a week many times and each day we'd easily hike 7 miles just climbing to the top of mountains and strolling around lakes (this is in the uinta mountains in utah). Unless you're going to be doing some serious hill climbs I'd just wear my regular shoes.

Who and where do you go hiking with? 😀

don't listen to everyone about hiking boots. you don't need them. infact, your feet will feel better and you will have more energy without them. i do a lot of hiking and worked as a bootsalesman. The new wave in hiking and backpacking is to go lightweight. that means no 5lbs boots. a pound on your feet is like 5 on your back.

have fun.

oh, water, snack, windbreaker, map, compass is all you will need.

Hiking boots are useful if you're going on a longer hike. They give more protection to your ankles because you don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to get home on a sprained ankle.

Helloooo.... a camera? I hike all the time and half the time forget my camera and kick myself in the arse for forgeting it. Other than that for a simple little hike decent semi-sturdy sneaks or shoes will do fine, water, snack, warm layer in case you need it, cell phone is always good (you got snakes and what not in AZ don't you? 🙂 ) sun glasses, maybe even a spanky walking stick? LOL

Don't go with a pair of brand new boots or shoes you'll get blisters on your feet and your feet will be killing you.. Wear a nice pair of well worn in shoes.

Where a comfortable pair of shoes. (Preferably a pair with ankle support) Take plenty of water and some snacks and take an extra layer of clothes. (AKA a sweatshirt or jacket) Even for a three mile hike. You will probably go from chilly in a shaded valley to baking on a sunny travel. Last time I hiked out in the sups, I had a 15 degree temperature swing from the velly to the one ridge top. Which trail are you taking anyway?

It's 2-3 miles. Unless you're the world's most out of shape person, you should be able to do it naked on an empty stomach. tennis shoes and water is fine.

I agree, my friends and I will just randomly decide to go hiking and strike out as is typically. Of course, a lot of it depends on terrain - walking a well-worn trail by a lake is different than a mountaintop experience or desert on a hot day.

You kidding? If you're in the woods, you gotta rough it.....no condoms. Only sailors need those anyhow, ya know since they're always going from port to port. The fruit and snacks are definitely a good choice cause you might get hungry. 😉

As a SAR member, I just want to let you all know that the most fatalities come from "day hikes". Most people do not bring what they need in case something, anything, happens.

Bring a dry set of clothes wrapped in zip locks
Signaling device, glowstick, strobe, flashlight, etc
Space blanket
Backpack, used for you stuff and as a sleeping bag
food
water
compass
water purification tabs

There are a few others but those are the most important. The best thing you can do is let your friends and/or family know where you are going and when you are supposed to be home. You should also leave an itinerary in your car where you depart from, it is a great resource when (if) we have to go looking for you.

Oh, best tip, have a great time! My suggestions are in case of a worst case scenario, which do happen, but not often. Be safe and have a blast...

<< i live in phoenix, az.... so i'm going to go with a friend to this place Superstition, AZ >>

been there several times. it rocks. bring 3x as much water as you think you need tho 🙂, and if you're gonna do it in tennis shoes (vs, say, some nice Timberlands), make sure the shoes are in good shape. And bring a frickin' camera! It's gorgeous out there.

if you're carrying a pack, bring a light jacket as well. figure on a worst-case scenario of it being 20 degrees colder than you expect.
